Yeah, I would hate to be in this position... I'd hate to be a military contractor close to any of this right now.

The whole thing makes me feel sick.

I like to think of it as listed in order. Oath to the Constitution sits above the oath to the president.

Having to disobey an order is never a trivial matter, though.

Thank you for your service.

You can request a judge advocate to clarify the legality of an order... not that it's usually an option in real time, or even reasonable, but it's a thing.

I feel for the people in this position who have to think "on the spot" about whether what they are doing is legal. It's hard for sure.

Yeah I don’t think her principles are that strong to begin with. She got her feels hurt and can’t handle it that’s all. Good riddance I say.

It’s just like when I ask my 10 year old if she did something wrong and she gets super defensive, I know she’s hiding something.

So yeah, he’s like a child being exposed of their mischief… 😏

A little bit of humility can go a long way!

When I learned to separate my personal value from my performance at work, I was able to deflate my ego and work in a much more productive manner.

To be brutally honest it was a process, but I'm a better developer having gone through it. (YMMV)

The most successful startup I worked at embodied this type of thinking. Removing waste, adding value, focus on one thing and do it well, lots of daily collaboration, white boarding, paired programming. Heavy emphasis on user feedback (surveys, analytics, customer support).

Well said.

Agreed.

There are many ways to increase the number of features released without drastically sacrificing quality. However, these approaches often entail other costs (security, scalability, longevity), so it's still a trade-off.

Facebook also decided that "red tape" on any system was a bad idea. That's why they found themselves with over 16 thousand engineers having nearly unrestricted access to personal user data. I don't think they are unique for this (from experience), but it's a nasty side effect (IMO).

Yeah it gets pretty tricky when you are in a chair and have to decide to “press the button” in real time.

It’s safe to say that when you disobey an order you should be certain, and that’s what causes so many issues.

Still there are people that specialize in this type of defense.

A judge advocate can be consulted to clarify if an order is legal. Obviously this may not always be available or reasonable in certain circumstances. Refusing an order that is legal is a violation that can lead to many different consequences including a court martial. See article 92 for more…
