The fearsome underdog of the Panmezo Ring, the diablorn holds fast as one of the most successful byrds of its caliber. Proving once and for all that generalists more often than not pull through against all odds

Antrorhynchids, though most renowned for their most derived members, those with reduced forelimbs and incredibly well developed hollow nasal crests (called nasal towers), still bear some of their more basal number in their ranks. Though overwhelmingly outnumbered, they still play a substantial role in any ecosystem they inhabit. Meet the diablorn. The most widespread macropredatory antrorhynchid on Paradoxia. As a rule, most of the giants of the clade such as the lornirex and the lornidor are restricted to Allun, but the diablorn breaks this convention in colonizing three of the four continents that make up the Panmezo Ring. Only Kaltun is spared from their ravagings, as the island chain that connects it to Allun is of a climate too cold for the byrds to bear. Diablorns are pack hunters. As they are on average smaller than their neighboring apex predators, only reaching 40 or 50 feet in large females, this incentives them to group together for mutual protection. Their social structure is unlike that of their derived cousins, inspite of their basal position, as they employ a polyandrous mating strategy. A clan is comprised of a dominant matriarch, her male partners, and her offspring. The offspring of both sexes always disperse upon maturity, and travel far and wide before settling down and founding clans of their own. This behavior is likely what allowed for their massive range across the three continents. This drive to disperse is bolstered by the fact that diablorns are territorial, and a clan may hold an enormously vast territory. Young males may join an already established clan, but the females always found their own. A matriarch never tolerates a competitor that is reproductively active. Genetic admixture is common, though a given region may have it's own distinct morph of diablorns. The female individual pictured above hails from the Spire Savannahs, with a lighter coat of plumage and a more extensive undercarriage.

Two enormous byrds locked in a conflict as old as time immemorial

The calm melodic morning chatter of dozens of little creatures is soon overwhelmed by loud roars and cracking tree trunks. The source of it all, two titanic animals locked in ferocious combat. A male white-faced malleorn has mounted an ambitious predation attempt on an adult blue gorn. Such a choice is unlike anything a predator even this great would dare consider, yet the reason why is irrelevant as the fight escalates further. As the malleorn flanks to land a bite, the gorn catches him in the attempt and throws him against the side of a tree. Disorientated, the malleorn gathers himself right before he falls over to his side, now staring down at his quarry. Both animals circle each other in a tense moment before closing in once again. If neither of them throws off the fight, only one will leave with their lives.

The striped lacerorn is the largest species of the Temnorhynchornis genus. A native to the Towertree Forests and the lower reaches of the Assendion Forests, they dominate the arboreal environment as the apex predator.
The Towertree Forests are one the most expansive habitats in the Panmezo Ring. With the towertrees themselves being the only "tree" plants within these forests, with their immense size and structure, they create an environment especially condusive for giant arboreal animals to inhabit. The striped lacerorn, largest of its genus, resides here. They are powerful and agile predators, being more than capable of punching above their weight class and subduing prey up to four times their size. And yet despite this, they are unique amongst their relatives for a near strict preference for targetting small game. Even their sympatric sister species, the smaller cackling lacerorn, regularly preys upon larger animals up in the trees. The reason they do this is perhaps to avoid competition with the larger predators on ground level, and possibly with their cousins as well. A monogamous species, they pair up for the remainder of their eight decades long lives. A clutch of 4 eggs is laid every six to seven years, with the hatched young being cared for extensively. A curious aspect of the striped lacerorns is the tendency for older individuals to assist their blood relatives, mostly children and grandchildren, in raising their own offspring. It's unknown why this sudden altruistic behavior arises in their twilight years. It could simply be the instinct to preserve their own bloodlines expanding over to their continued descendants, or maybe, just maybe, a look into a level of intelligence higher than what was previously expected.

The loasognire is the largest herbivore roaming the tundras of southern most Mezzem. Here in these frigid cold stretches, far too cold for any guttur competition, they've held their niche unimpeded

The tundras of southern Mezzem are held within the embrace of the continent's mountain range, which loops around and below Mezzem back again up north. Temperatures even at spring and summers are far colder than any guttur could handle. In place of these reptyls, a paramniote of gargantuan proportions has filled for the vacancy. A herd of 60 ton behemoths trudge through the cold wastes, wrapped in coarse dark shaggy hair, stark against their bone white faces. The loasognire is the largest animal anywhere on this vast biome. Most apparent and impressive of their features are the pair of jaw horns. These horns are formed by extensions of their jaw bones and covered within thick layers of keratin and other soft tissue. Strong and flexible, they are largest in the males, which use them to joust against each other to assert themselves in the dominance hierarchy. The most aggressive males control harems with the most females in the herd, which could number in the hundreds. Females are also endowed with these horns, but are far shorter and more strongly curved than the males. At a smaller two thirds of the size, they employ these weapons against predators far more often. A female loasognire has been isolated from her herd following a snowstorm. As she passes through a rocky gorge, a thescelornid predator has her sights on her. This snow lacerorn dame skillfully clambers across the broken terrain with incredible stealth. Her goal is to leap atop the loasognire's back and grapple with her massive talons, and then to tear apart the neck with her fearsome beak. Not a particularly easy task, as the loasognire is covered in a shaggy coat, as well as tough hide and fat up to a foot thick

By the sandy shores of the Insulassia ocean, on a beach the Allun and Mezzem land bridge outside the verdant jungle of Edenia, a bizarre looking creature waddles lethargically. A most curious and dazzling animal, meet the malachite scowtcher. It is among the most abundant creatures of the beaches it resides in. A benthic specialist of burrowing animals, it plucks it's prey out of the sands with it's large front teeth. Shelled animals would then be crushed against the palatal teeth and ossified tongue, while softer bodied prey are sliced apart by the teeth on the jaws. Despite being a large animal at 40 ft long, it is still prey to many predators including the colossal greater coastal kraken. To deter such fearsome threats, they posses a stinger at the end of a dexterous tail. This tail is a heavily modified salt secreting organ. Excess salt from their diet is condensed and crystalized within the stinger, and injected into would be aggressors. Males form leks from which they display their fitness, signified by the vibrancy of their scales. Although physical confrontations are rare, they can get quite bloody, as their jaws can be put to use for more than just feeding

An early autumn scene in the tundras of Mezzem, the southern most reaches of the Panmezo Ring
A scene of predator and prey locked in a back and forth dance of life and death. The three-pointed sundorn is a predatory thescelornid byrd, an apex predator of southern most Mezzem. Living in social highly coordinated packs, they are able to work in tandem and take down some of the most dangerous prey animals their habitat has to offer. The ornate scornbeast isn't a true native to the tundras, as they are seasonal migrants that spend their time grazing here in the spring and summer months. Huge and armored from head to rump in cornified hide, living in massive herds numbering in the thousands, they and their kind are some of the most common herbivorous megafauna of the Panmezo Ring

The magnificent emerald guttur is one of the the most commonly encountered herbivore of its size class in Allun. At over 60 feet tall, it's actually considered to be on the small to medium end of guttur sizes, but more than makes up for it in aggression
The emerald guttur. A large herbivore that is synonymous with the grand continent of Allun. These massive animals roam in small groups consisting of related individuals or strangers, and these groups are then part of a larger herd, sometimes reaching 80 animals strong. Gutturs, as their name suggests, are vocal animals. Separate herds maintain contact with one another through elaborate booming calls, exchanging information about many things, from travel paths to the location of resources. The scissor esque beaks of emerald gutturs aren't only used to slice through vegetation, but also predators. With the amount of predators that can be found in the lower half of Allun, both from the land and the air, even their sheer size alone wouldn't suffice.

The undisputed kings of the rivers, these Allunian leviathanosaurs regularly reach 70 to even 80 feet long. The largest bulls, called rivermasters, can exceed over 100 feet and weigh as much as 50 tons
Largest and most infamous of it's genus, the red-speckled daemon is a massive 70 ft long riverine predator that haunts by ambush, bursting out of the water and seizing prey within it's monstrous maw. A native to Allun, it stalks the great rivers which runs down from the Five Great Inland Seas all the way to the Ludenian jungle. Indeed their most recognizable feature is their impressive set of jaws, filled with teeth of various shapes and sizes. These teeth, which are heterodont, have three distinct shapes. The inner teeth are partially serrated yet thick and wide, and coupled with their great bite force is suitable to crush bones. The front set of teeth are cylindrical and curved, which Aids in grasping large prey that may otherwise escape. The tusks of the upper jaw play little role in prey capture as their upturned shape denies purchase to hide and flesh, but is most useful for intraspecific combat. Daemons of both sexes engage in ritualized combat to assert their dominance, sometimes to lethal result. Cannibalism is so common in fact, that some individuals are specialists in predating their own kind

Kaltun, Allun, Mezzem and Breeyoh are four continents that form a region that is called the "Panmezo Ring". This is due the location of these four continents being the convergence point of the world's western and eastern hemispheres, and the fact that they form a ring of sorts that surrounds the Insulasia Ocean. Balaiah and Allun were sibling continents, and before that they were connected to the three continents of Kaltun, Aurideluv and Antedeluv. At one point over hundreds of millions of years ago these continents were joined together, all five of them making up what is called the "Baltudeluvian Joint", or just Baltudeluvia. Mezzem, Breeyoh and Fuluyoh were also once a single continent, named Mezuyo. Today only Mezzem and Breeyoh are remotely connected to each other, with Fuluyoh having drifted as far as to be connected with Aurideluv by a thin land bridge.

The lornirex, largest terrestrial predator in Allun, and one of the first creatures I ever made for Paradoxia
The lornirex is the most infamous of Allun's apex predator guild. At a little over 20 meters long and weighing in at 12 tons, they're the largest antrorhynchid byrd alive. The lornirex lives in multi-generational families of the parents and their young. These extended families cooperate with another during hunts. Young that are of age provide the speed while the adults cover the brawn. This is not to say both age groups are dependent on the other, far from it, both are equally capable predators in their own right. It's just that working together increases their odds by a great deal. True to their other antrorhynchid cousins, lornirex sociality isn't limited to their immediate family. Teenage packs and unrelated family coalitions often form inresponse to food abundance. Lornirexes are also one of the few predators on Paradoxia to readily tackle adult gutturs. These drawn out hunts can last for days and involve up to thirty individuals at a time, sometimes even more
