Possibly an avenue for acoustic monitoring no? It's done for deforestation monitoring, and the 🇺🇦 use it for drone detection. If you can put enough (cheap) stations and monitor their feed via a thoroughly ML trained system you could perhaps get through some of that concealment.

I doubt that the Medbed will speed up his recovery.

*elected leader. The princess of Norway would be some solid competition otherwise. Though not much of a leader I guess.

You think it'd be enough to turn a small borough somewhere to reform?

I swear if we get an electoral version of the bangbus... And I would honestly not be that shocked if it is tried, it would definitely be content.

Mind you, that ought to be a higher number of people than you'd think.

Gotcha, they're the main ingredient of salty licorice then.

There is (used to be? its been a while) a bar in Amsterdam where I need to get on the tip of my toes to use the urinal, and I’m 1.74… sometimes I do get reminded that I live in the tallest country in the world and get to feel like a little boy once more.

My pleasure. Although reading it back I wrote this in a very dispassionate way. In our practice the ASM miners are front and centre with their own histories, understandings, and perspectives. But at a more macro level it can be clearer to talk about mines rather than miners.
November 12, 2025 at 8:31 PM
But that mine might not be sustainable within the context of ASM miners. So in a nutshell an ASM mine is this meme in a mining form.

optimum niche exploitation (however ugly the result might look like). And if your responses towards ASM were developed by people coming from industrial mines and their operational environment, well you know what perfection will look like for them... It will look like a small industrial mine...
November 12, 2025 at 12:17 PM
To awkwardly use a biological parallel, this approach assumes that ASM operations always need to “evolve” towards a more organised and technified model to survive/better themselves; which mischaracterises evolution as a process that aims to achieve perfection (however defined it is) rather than...

sector have been designed from the perspective that every ASM operation is a mine that teleologically wants to be a (small) industrial mine, but that cannot achieve it due to some technical/financial constrains. And this is empathetically not always true, not every ASM operations is a stepstone...

child labour, working conditions, pollution, etc…) that are not fully cognisant of the entire relevant operational/social environment will not have any meaningful uptake.
Within that, the thought your thread reminded me of is that at a fundamental level a lot of the interventions targeting the ASM..
November 12, 2025 at 12:16 PM
to walk out of this class with is that ASM is not a form of primitive mining but rather one that is a social phenomenon uniquely adapted to local circumstances, and through a savage iterative process at that. And thus that solutions to the issues of ASM (conflict with industrial mines...

Ufffff 😅 Not sure how versed you are into artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) and its role in global mineral supply chains (incl. for transition minerals) and why it’s probably the most important global livelihoods we keep ignoring. But in a nutshell one of the key outcomes I want students...

Janne, thanks for this thread! It reminded me of a specific point I though about just before going to bed last night for a class I'm giving on artisanal and small-scale mining. I knew there was a point I wanted to make, but couldn't remember which one! Kiitos!!

Ok, but are we looking at this from a "classic JarJar" standpoint, or from the "Dark Bink" conspiratorial standpoint?
