The result? The collapse of moderate politics. "Youngsters who had seen their friends die that day flocked to join the IRA." When the law becomes the enemy, the outlaw becomes the protector. State violence didn't end the conflict; it fueled it for 30 more years.

Jan 30, 1972. The state sent the Parachute Regiment to police a civil rights march. They shot 26 unarmed people. The Widgery Tribunal then cleared the soldiers, calling the dead "gunmen." This wasn't just murder; it was the state institutionalizing a lie.

Violence doesn't happen in a vacuum. It happens when politics fail. By 1972, the Catholic community in N. Ireland faced:

Gerrymandered voting districts.

Housing discrimination.

Internment without trial (mass arrests of civilians). The state had already burned the bridge to democracy.

The IICSA inquiry later found that former Council Leader Richard Farnell "lied to the Inquiry" about his knowledge of the abuse.
This wasn't a secret pact; it was willful blindness. A refusal to see what was "low priority."

This impunity trickled down. It created the environment for the Knowl View School scandal—a site of "total institutional failure" where safeguarding protocols collapsed.
When the powerful are protected, the vulnerable pay the price.

We uncovered a pattern not of incompetence, but of deference.
In 1979, the Rochdale Paper exposed Smith with sworn affidavits.
The response? Official misinformation. The DPP’s office lied to the national press, claiming they had "no record" of the case. MI5 files later confirmed this falsehood.

In 1970, Lancashire Constabulary had him. They had the victims, the testimonies, and the intent to prosecute.
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) shut it down in 72 hours.
Why? "Staleness" of complaints and Smith’s "good character."
That decision was the original sin of the Rochdale crisis.

We need to stop calling this a "failure."
A system that prioritizes budget protection over human life is working exactly as it was designed to.

The "Statistical Trap":
A "Sudden Death" is not a crime statistic. A "Homicide" is.
If you investigate a death and can't solve it, your stats go down.
The incentives were aligned to not look too closely.

The "Lifestyle Discount":
Investigators used the victims' lifestyles (chemsex, gay men) as a fiscal excuse to bypass expensive toxicology screenings.
By labelling deaths "non-suspicious," they saved the budget but cost lives.
