a super simplified doc I made back in 2021 to explain something that can be deceptively confusing - the forelegs of horses vs dogs
Quadruped Foreleg Anatomy. Though many mammals will share similar skeletal construction - the amount of bones, the joints, etc - how those bones and joints are proportioned can vary greatly from animal to animal. While humans and giraffes both have 7 vertebrae in their neck, the scale and proportion of those bones is quite different. Similar can be said of the front legs of horses and dogs. (Here there is a visual breakdown comparing a horse's foreleg, to a human arm, to a dog's foreleg.) As you can see in the above illustration, the proportions of the forearm bones and joints is quite different between horses, dogs, and even us humans! And that plays a great deal in how we simplify these limbs for cartoons. When posing for dogs in animation, keep to more canine proportions and avoid the "horse knee". (here is a visual of a dog with the correct limb proportions, and incorrect limb proportions, that showcase a prominent wrist joint that is too high up the foreleg.) When posing horses for animation, keep to more equine proportions and make sure the "horse knee" is utilized. (A visual of a horse with the correct foreleg proportions, a prominent wrist joint half way up the foreleg - also called the "horse knee". The incorrect drawing has that joint too close to the hoof) Don't reinvent the wheel - refer to how others have done it in the past! (Multiple screenshots of cartoon horses and dogs, their different foreleg joints highlighted to show their proportional differences and how past artists have simplified their legs.)
