That's always been the wildest thing to me. Why punish a reader for picking up what you were putting down? I wonder if it's because of the 2010s trend of "shocking" the reader/audience, ala the Red Wedding, plus the modern aversion to spoilers that lead to writers fully changing plots on the fly.
