🌱 Might briefly dip below freezing early tomorrow morning, and I just got this 🌶️ haul yesterday. The plants are sheltering in place under cover and hopefully most will be ok. Been a great season!

🌱 Went upstate for a couple of days to do fieldwork this week and returned to find my peppers 🌶️ had gone nuclear 🤯

🌱Habaneros, Trinidad Scorpions, and a pepper from Venezuela I don't know the name of. Pretty sure all three are the same species (C. chinense), with dramatic differences in heat levels due to human meddling over time. Fresh from the garden 🌶️🔥💥

🌱 Peppers are starting to pop! 🌶️🔥

🌱 First 🌶️ s are in! They don't look like much right now, but they have a horde of siblings still ripening outside. Banana, cayenne, habanero, scorpion, Venezuelan ají, Belizean pico de paloma, and Apache in frame

🌱 Trinidad Scorpion. The Queen of Heat. Bought a plant at the market a few years ago and it's gone now, but I've had way better luck growing from seed with these guys than ghost or Carolina Reapers. My only super-hot in the collection this year.

🌱 Apache Pepper. I bought plants and had them in hanging planters a few years back. Very pretty, but the peppers are also hot and tasty. Originally thought the plant was shishito when the seeds sprouted last year but nope...

🌱 Venezuelan Ají. Planted a whole pepper given by a friend late in the season last year. No fruit then but hoo boy, lookit 'em now! Can't wait to try them out.

🌱 Red Habanero, I think. This came from a purposefully mixed up set of seeds I planted last year. I don't think it included farmers market habs but shouldn't had habs I'd grown in years past up north. No fruit last year so we'll soon see what variety it is. Exciting!

🌱 Banana Pepper. Bought as a mature plant for my partner last year (she likes 🌶️ but doesn't like the heat). Minimal production then and looked kaput but it overwintered and has come back bigger and better than before.

🌱 Orange Habanero. I bought a huge bag of peppers at the NOLA farmer's market in '22 and couldn't eat them all before they turned. Did a little viability test on some seeds and they sprouted right in the water. Some of the originals are still with me.

🌱 Belize Pico de Paloma. A few dried peppers made their way back from Belize in '22 and I planted them whole. I think every seed in every pepper sprouted. Most of the plants are still going, except some I gave to friends. They grow semi-wild in Mesoamerica.

🌱 Call this DTR (Down the River) Thai. Don't really know what it is. Bought some hot peppers in a bag from a little store DTR and planted ones I didn't eat. Have a few of these guys in the "garden" now. The fruits grow upwards.

🌱 Cayenne. Bought this as a mature plant late last season and it produced a lot. Took some hurricane damage but overwintered and is back, baby!

🌱 Pepper Row at dusk. Hoping to solve a drainage problem and get some more permanent beds put in, but until then, we'll go with what we have. Example 🌶️ in the thread 👇

🌱 Trinidad Scorpions 🌶️ 🦂 are starting to come online. Early harvest is looking good, just hope they ripen before the summer heat hits #NOLA #gardening

🌱 The "miracle" pepper. I grew this Belizean pico de paloma from seed 3 years ago. Its pot was infested with ants this winter and I gave up on it during the #NOLA #snowpocalypse. Covered in snow and exposed to 20° F temps for 5 days...and it came back!

Man I was so ready for this

Get greedy with the king cake, get got. Silver lining: I now have a heavenly mandate to try the new bakery I've been driving past #Carnival 🎭 szn

🌱 Limbs from neighbors' pecan tree came down on the roof after a storm (luckily no major damage). So I'm borrowing from my Maya farmer friends and burning them for soil amendments for the spring planting (after chopping the traditional way, with a machete).

Well, one really good thing happened today, anyway

🌱 The annual ritual of making the back porch into a tarped plant lifepod, and sharing the house with our leafy brethren, in advance of a polar vortex has begun
