Right now my external SSD boot drive is 3.1Tb filled out of a 4Tb drive. It’s been 6 years since I got a new Mac so I’m willing to spend some $$, and $600 for an external OWC TB5 4Tb drive, esp since I’m ’saving’ $200 on upgrading the internal SSD.

Yeah, I was originally thinking of paying for $200 upgrade of internal SSD from 256Gb to 1Tb, but with Thunderbolt 5's speed, one option is applying that money towards a TB5 4Tb external SSD and make the external the boot drive. (I'm doing something similar now w/ an old Intel iMac.)

Thinking about the Pro mini over the iMac just for the Thunderbolt 5 ports, which make SSD connection almost as fast as internal SSD? With Sequoia now allowing installation of MAS apps on external drives this might be good enough to install things heavy duty apps like Ableton Live and get good perf.

Thanks. I read that… but didn’t quite agree with his contention about TB5. Especially now that a recent update to Sequoia finally allows MAS apps to be installed on external drives, TB5 becomes a much more compelling option for regular use by regular users.

Jeff, with Apple standardizing on TB4 as the base Mac connection, and starting to migrate to TB5 will you update your external storage articles soon?
