I recently built a shiny app (wildspire.shinyapps.io/Wild-Toohey/) that uses iNat/ALA data. My script to extract iNat data is github.com/shellylac/AL... note the bulk of my app data is from ALA via {galah} package - as that aggregates lots of iNat data. Hope this helps - feedback welcome too.
