I love FORCE OF EVIL and the way it connects the illegal “numbers racket” to capitalism, so I’m going with that.

Day 16 #NoirvemberChallenge
Lesser-known noir everyone should see.

Not sure if this counts as lesser-known, but I’m a big fan of TOO LATE FOR TEARS. Amazing combo of female criminality and lower-middle-class precarity.

I had never seen Lon Chaney in Tod Browning’s THE UNKNOWN. 🙈 What a gift to see if for the first time on the big screen at the Orinda Theatre accompanied by two silent film music gods — Stephen Horne and Frank Bockius!

Love Mary Astor in the gritty bar scene in Act of Violence, then afterwards in her apartment.

Noir you’d show to someone who’s never seen one.

I get the pleasure of doing this once or twice a year to 100s of students. Always choose one of these two beauts. Never fails.
