Ok I looked this book up and saw a one-star review complaining “the first half of this book made my brain numb with all the nautical terms” and I’m going to buy it immediately.

Very much this. There is something appealing about a book or series where an author had a particular and coherent vision and absolutely WENT FOR IT, even when I’m not sure I like whatever “it” is.
