Three swallows wondering wtf people are celebrating on July 4th. I got nothing, swallows.

Conflict is on the menu today, apparently.
A Calliope Hummingbird dive bombs a Yellow Warbler perched in a serviceberry bush. The Calliope has its back to the viewer but his gorget feathers are visibly spread out in a threatening fashion, reminiscent of the Demagorgon from Stranger Things. The defiant yellow warbler stares down the tiny hummingbird with a look that says “not today, asshole.” A group of full-sized fledgling Common Ravens are gathered on a hillside, full-sized but obviously young because of their blue eyes. They all face an adult Raven who is likewise turned to face them. The closest young Raven appears to be screaming in the adult’s face, while the adult leans backward away from its apoplectic hellspawn. This exasperated bird is clearly ready to be an empty nester. A blue-eyed fledgling Common Raven faces the viewer, hunched down and crouched as if to launch in their general direction. The Raven appears to be screaming. The Raven is kind of an asshole. A beautiful iridescent-blue-and-white Tree Swallow perches on a white fence post in a perfect side view to the camera. His wings and tail are raised as he lifts his head in what appears to be a blood-curdling scream. In this sacred moment, the Tree Swallow sends his final fuck out into the universe before taking off to catch some bugs for his littles.

This was right outside of a closed restaurant on the Oregon coast last summer. I got a lot of pics with my real camera but this was taken with my phone. They were fearless!

I followed some strange noises in a natural area of my local city park, and found a pair of fledgling Common Ravens eating moss from trees and talking amongst themselves. First time to capture Ravens with blue eyes/pink beaks. 🖤

He’s back! Mr. Calliope flew in just this morning to land on his favorite shrub in a natural park in a deep blue neighborhood in a bluish-purple city in a red county in the east side of a blue state on the left coast. We missed you, buddy. 💕

It’s been a long time since I’ve posted artwork in process… feeling ever-so-slightly hopeful after yesterday tho, so here are a few enamels in the works.
A series of colorful birds depicted in enamel fired onto steel panels lined up on a shelf. All colors have been fired onto the metal and the images await black line work, the final firing in the process. Enamels are fired onto steel one color at a time for 2-5 minutes at 1350-1500° F. The birds from top to bottom are a Belted Kingfisher, a Black-billed Magpie, an American Crow, and a Western Bluebird. Four different feathers made of hammered copper await enamel colors. Once completed, the matching feathers will be attached with wire to the enameled panels with images of a Belted Kingfisher, a Black-billed Magpie, an American Crow, and a Western Bluebird.

Robin party in my yard Monday, which was far superior to the Senate wing of the Democratic Party today (my awesome WA state senators and many others excluded of course, you rock!)

I got to see my holy grail of birds today, in my neighborhood where a handful of them only show up briefly just before spring. Varied Thrush. Notoriously difficult to spot and worse to photograph. 🧡🖤 I hope you see something good today, too. We could all use it.
