Miratha’s tail thrashed irritably. “What makes you so sure the humans would annihilate us?” “Your—our—numbers are few. And the humans have made many advances in recent centuries. Do you know what gunpowder is?” He enunciated the word in the common Salerian dialect. When the other dragon shook her head, he repeated the word with greater difficulty in Tolstadi. Miratha stared at him blankly. Salarath wasn’t surprised. He doubted dragonic even had a word for it. “It’s a human weapon,” he explained. “It allows them to create great explosions.” Miratha snorted. “Human sorcerers’ tricks.” “No. Gunpowder is not magic. Even the least energy-sensitive among their kind can use it to knock a dragon from the sky or cave in tunnels. They could bury us alive before our stone-shapers would have a chance to dig us out.” Guilt twisted in his gut. If it came down to war, Salarath knew which side he’d be on, and it wouldn’t be the one that wanted to slaughter his family and friends. Then again, something in his gut told him he wouldn’t be around to see it if Draumen got his war; Salarath suspected his cousin wouldn’t show him the mercy he’d granted Miratha, rules be damned. His description of humankind’s technological advancements seemed to give Miratha pause, the sure set of her jaw loosening as her air of superiority withering away. “And what would you do about the human menace then, son of Rathlorn? Would you have us continue to cower in our holes like rats?”

Surprisingly, I didn't have much to choose from in either WIP I'm actively working on but I was able to dust off a back-burnered project and find a fitting snippet.
Beorg was running late. It was not the sort of thing an Ælv royal usually made a habit of, though there seemed to be a lot of it going around. Hulderic had been due home almost a whole moon-cycle ago, and yet he was still missing. No word had come back to the court from the king’s retinue, and the royal siblings were beginning to worry. Well, Beorg was beginning to worry. She suspected for all his platitudes that their middle brother, Wigmære, was not nearly so concerned with the welfare of the current ruler of Middlegard’s Ælv population. That Wigmære coveted his half-brother’s throne was probably the worst-kept secret in the entire court. There was not a soul for a hundred miles that was unaware of the prince’s rapacious nature.
