We’re not quite at ‘Hang it in The Louvre’ stage, but five wins in a row will do very nicely for now.

Still miss Sportsweek on 5Live.

In the same time slot we now have the radio equivalent of The One Show. News lite, sports lite, IQ lite.

One of the Beeb’s poorest programming decisions.

A tournament and a match that re-invented modern cricket. Only 16 ODIs had previously been played. With Kerry Packer as an accelerant two years later, the game was never the same again.
June 21st 1975. The one day of cricket I would pick to revisit if I could. The inaugural World Cup final, an epic between Australia and West Indies, played in glorious sunshine. Here a wide-angle Patrick Eagar photo shows Ian Chappell about to be run out by Viv Richards

The only possible choice for the turntable tonight.

He was 23. 23!

Vale, maestro.

Just heard about Jamie Muir. This is going straight onto the turntable. Very loud. RIP maestro.

Always been one of my favourite cricket photographs, taken at one of my favourite cricket grounds, the much-missed Antigua Rec. ‘…cuts Colin Croft for six…’ An extraordinary shot in every sense which evokes what it was like to face the West Indies bowlers at that time. Willey was hard as nails.
Peter Willey cuts Colin Croft for six, West Indies v England, 4th Test, Antigua, March 27th 1981. His gutsy unbeaten hundred earned him the Man-of-the-Match award and, with some help from rain, steered England to a draw. Both Willey's Test hundreds came against West Indies #cricket

Late posting this, mea culpa. A thousand thanks to @whisperingbob.bsky.social for featuring my tribute to the late, great Pete Sinfield on your show last Sunday.

Here it is, from 1:29:39.

Glad you liked ‘a poet’s soul’, Bob.

Perudo next time you’re in Glastonbury!

Inspired by my old mate @brianmoore666.bsky.social’s excellent Keith Emerson or Rick Wakeman? question last night - a debate I recall us having at school - here are two clips of the maestros at their peak, in ‘73

Transcribing an interview using new AI software. Interviewee talks about Ricey getting a five-for. AI renders ‘five-for’ as ‘Pfeiffer’.

First time I heard a cricketer refer to a ‘Michelle’ was mid 80s. My old mate Derek Pringle, from memory.

Very much enjoyed speaking to Notts Cricket Lovers Society last Thursday night about my forthcoming biography of Clive Rice, a hallowed name for the Trent Bridge faithful. Great people, great night.
