So many self employed and small business owners, like myself and my wife, are simply screwed. We've had insurance our entire adult lives, rarely used. Now I find in our "golden years" when it's needed most, it'll cost us $50-60K per year to keep it. Make any of this make sense...

Was there the last time and bringing at least a +1 this time. The atmosphere at the last one was incredibly welcoming (I was almost in tears at the outpouring of patriotism... real patriotism) and I'm sure it will be even more so this time around.

Yep, understand your thought process. And had it not been for a thankfully benign but incurable cancer scare a few years back we may have considered. Ironically, that now preexisting condition allows any private insurance options to say "no thanks, we'd rather not have your business". No win sitch.

My wife and I have paid $20k/yr in premiums for the last 5 years, then we each have $12k in deductibles. That's for a silver plan in Indiana. Thankfully we've never come close to the deductibles. We're both in our early 60's now and this is unsustainable and, as you said, insane.

Devastating is accurate. Already pay $2,000/mo through the ACA for wife and myself. So even those of us who've never received any subsidies whatsoever, will be pushed to make hard decisions like going without health insurance. And with us both in our 60's, that's an insane choice.

Is it too simple to assume that "somebody" could create a not for profit health insurance company? They'd have a fast monopoly allowing them to negotiate with hospitals, or "someone" could create nfp hospitals too.
