The thought that keeps going through my mind tonight makes an unwelcome return after a couple decades: “You break it and you own it.” I don’t want to break Iran or own it.

As somebody who grew up loving music, the deaths this week of Sly Stone and now the great, great Brian Wilson are terrible blows. But I fear a lot of heartache lies ahead. An era is definitely ending. Bless the musicians and all they do for us.

An epic tennis match (sinner vs. alcaraz) heralds the dawn of a great new rivalry, and it comes just when we need it.

Today I learn the Energy Star public-private partnership to aid consumers buy energy efficient appliances is being shut down, and I am honestly baffled by any reason to do such a thing. How on earth does that help anything?

Bought a new hot mitt for my kitchen and my hands don’t fit. That’s just stupid.

Saw a great movie tonight. Can’t say that often. Perfect Days, directed by Wim Wenders, is a film you should see if you haven’t. It’s streaming on Hulu.

When did it become OK for candidates to just text me and offer money? I can’t believe the political corruption has become so brazen. Earth to all of those assholes: I already voted.

There is a new Brian Eno album. I am happy.

Why am I getting voicemails from Texas reminding me to get my absentee ballot in by April 1? Whoever the hell you are, I’ve handled it just fine up to here.

If you don’t know, Peter Wolf was the longtime lead vocalist for the J. Geils Band. Then made a series of terrific solo albums. He was also married to Faye Dunaway at the peak of her career. And he seemed to know everyone in the arts scene in one way or another. Seek it out.

Enjoying the hell out of Peter Wolf’s wonderful new memoir “Waiting on the Moon”. A joy to read and discover the remarkable life of Wolf. Every turn of a page brings a remarkable new story of a musician, actor, poet or raconteur. Highly recommended. Rare memoir that makes me a little jealous.

Warmer in Janesville, Wis., today than Phoenix. But my weather still has snow possible next week. The world is weird.

It must be my Catholic childhood calling: I have a hankering for a huge plate of fish and potato pancakes on Friday. Had a lot of good times with my folks back in those days.

For the first time I am pondering getting off of all social media. This would be a drastic move for a reclusive person like me. I find a lot of things I like there: news of friends, the beauty of the world, and the oddities. But the news is so dispiriting that it poses a threat. Any thoughts?

Finished first pass of shoveling driveway. There was a lot of snow piled up out there. Spoiled by a season that has been largely snow free.

Another MU Law poll to depress the shit out of me today. Uggggleeee.

Wake up to learn the Milwaukee Bucks have traded Khris Middleton to the Washington Wizards. Whatever the merits of this deal, it is a great loss for any Bucks fan. Hard to see such a favorite player leave. Best wishes, Mr. Middleton.

Disappointing for an old newspaper guy to see The Guardian get a news story up on the crash tonight in Philly before The NY Times or WaPo. Credit to The Guardian.

Latest phrase I keep seeing in my reading: he had a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. I like the image but…

Good hoops night at my house. Top-notch UConn- Nova matchup in Big East. Barnburner game between OKC and Cleveland, and then a good win for Bucks vs. improving Spurs team. Wish they were all like that.

I would and do wish all a Happy New Year but current events have already established American life will never change in 2025 or ever. Through it all, I wish you all Peace.

Reading my first book of the New Year in my living room when I have a Tell Tale Heart moment. A weird rhythmic thumping sounds like a beating heart. Where is it coming from? Then I realize I forgot to start the dishwasher last night, so turned it on today. Ooof.

Really hope this Marquette team is playing this well in March. They look impressive.

Any team able to go in to Providence’s home court and come away with a lopsided victory deserves full credit: well done MUBB. Marquette 78, Providence 50. Ooooof.

My sense right now is that Joel Embiid and Andre Drummond would like to grind Wemby into little tiny pieces right now. And in that matchup, Wembanyama looks like a stick man.
