If you have it please donate cash to the food banks. $10 in their hands will feed more people than the $10 worth of canned goods you can buy for retail prices. Also check on your elders. Many of them will not admit they rely on these programs so grocery gift cards or a surprise bag of staples

Brent Staples's piece from a few years back about how Italians became white Americans and the role of Columbus Day in that is worthy of a (re)read today:

Thanks to Susan Orlean's memoir for alerting me to this A+ HS basketball headline in the NYT in 1989.

My almost-15-year-old has no relationship with radio. He discovers new (or new-to-him) songs and artists via Instagram, Tik-Tok and, surprise, surprise (to me), the video game MLB The Show. Kudos to the folks behind its soundtrack: You are doing a great job broadening my kid's playlists.

There is a thorny history of which persons living in the U.S. have been counted, and by how much, in census numbers that form the bedrock of U.S. democracy.

But since the first U.S. census in 1790, this has been an unwavering truth: No resident has ever been left out because of immigration status.
Trump wants a new U.S. census to exclude people here illegally. It'd be unprecedented
Trump is calling for a "new" census that excludes people in the U.S. without legal status. The 14th Amendment requires the "whole number of persons in each state" in a key set of census results.

My son has an awesome viola teacher. This week, he was struggling with a few notes that were coming out mushy, almost elasticized. The teacher asked him to describe the sound. An ambulance (siren), my son offered. She countered with "wambulance." And then: "Beethoven doesn't want the wambulance."

Despite some glum days, we are loving The Pitt, and I learned some cool history tonight from it (and some subsequent searching), albeit with a bitter ending. Kudos to NY Mag for jumping on this.
This week’s episode of ‘The Pitt’ gives honor and attention to the members of Freedom House Ambulance, who helped create the EMS system we know today. This documentary makes plain how much more they deserve.

There are days -- a lot of them lately -- when I wish Mike Royko were still alive and pounding out columns. The feeling has been especially strong today.

This has been such a long month. I've spent part of the evening with the Gospel of Matthew. After some of the ways I've seen Christianity misinterpreted and warped lately, I was drawn especially to Matthew 25: 31-46. I will do my best to remember it as the year unfolds. Simple guidance, really.
