I’m hoping it’s the weird niche indie AIs that survive — like a robot some gardener made to observe and communicate with the local squirrels and possums, or a drone that perpetually seeks out rainbows and takes pictures for nobody.

Agreed! Utopian sci-fi feels actionable, inspiring, hopeful. I love Star Trek so much for this, and for its core tension of smart, thoughtful people trying to navigate complex cultural and political situations in the most ethical and humanistic ways possible!
