East Asian Studies librarian recently retired and enjoying time to read picture books, take long walks, and chat with my dogs. I will always make time for former students and folks with quirky questions about Japanese toilets or books.
Google image suggests Chinese ink stone, which makes sense.

Kotobank’s dictionaries give an easier version: don’t wake a sleeping baby. 寝た子を起こすな

That is Gordon Hirayabashi. I knew him when I was a student at the University of Alberta. Esther was his first wife and they were married about 30 years. He later married again to Susan. His story and legacy is remarkable. www.historylink.org/file/2070
Hirabayashi, Gordon K. (1918-2012)
In a remarkable show of personal courage, Seattle native Gordon Hirabayashi was one of handful of Japanese Americans nationwide to defy U.S. government curfew and "evacuation" orders issued in 1942 (

Wait. Why are you trying to tell a 14 year old what to wear? Sounds like a fight to me.

But isn't it great and can't you visualize tiny Yukitaka (or as he then styled himself Yukitaca), Keio alum, brother of Yukio, one of the most capable English speakers of his time, choosing theatre over politics. What kind of theatrical troupe would take him on? Did he get to perform? Aah, so good.

In the book 異国遍路旅芸人始末書 by 松岡謙二, there is a very short paragraph mentioning him and saying, Yukitaka may have had intentions to be a 文士 but in the end threw himself into a ヤクザ的な劇団 (p.53). And of course, being older Japanese scholarship, no citations at all.

There has definitely been a lot of talk about the government restricting access in the future, so it wouldn't surprise me if anyone who doesn't fit in this category is going for a booster: anyone who is at least 65 or who has a medical condition that can increase the risk of severe illness or death.

Do you have any students who read both Chinese and Japanese and are interested in the period? I bet the Ozaki angle would be really interesting.

They are out of scope of what I am working on, but they were well connected and I am curious what they did after 1913. Anyone come across them in their studies?

The two youngest brothers are much trickier to find information on. They were friends of Miyazaki Toten and involved in supporting Sun Yat-sen’s campaigns and traveled with him raising funds and collecting weapons.

He is listed in Japanese Who’s Who as Yukio’s younger brother who went with him to the US in 1888.

The Ozaki I am in the midst of researching used the romaji Osaki Yukitaca and worked as a valet and yacht steward for the actor William Gillette and retired on Gillette’s property.

Ozaki Yukio is very well known. He had several children who are also very well known. Not sure why, but one of his sons is Hikomaro and not a YukiXX. There has to be a story there.

Pushkin is publishing and reissuing some really great stuff. Congratulations on being one of the classics.

Yeah, unless they are rare books and you can donate money to help pay for the cataloging, most libraries don’t want them. I was able to give a small amount to students, but they don’t read like they used to. Now I gift 1 book at a time:)
