Rahan Gryf, an aspiring Magos Explorator, was responsible for uncovering the remains of a lost human civilisation from the days before Old Night. Previously uncatalogued, the science of this world was based on nanotechnology with the signature appearance of shining crystal. A mishap on the expedition saw Gryf infected with these nanomachines - recalled to Mars, the technology proved no less obscure to their fellows, and its effects impossible to reverse. Gryf was removed from duty as Explorator but permitted to continue their existence in order to study their affliction, which has largely remained dormant in recent decades - however, the crystalline nanomachines fiercely reject any further mechanical augmentation to their body, immediately healing any injuries or incisions with their own impenetrable framework, leaving Gryf somewhat of a pariah among their colleagues for their fleshly visage. Zefiris, once known as the Mortal Whisper, held a name of some repute in the arenas of Commoragh - but fell utterly under the spell of Yvraine when the aeldari made her mark there. Quick to join the her crusade as the Dark City fell, Zefiris was purged of the soul-thirst alongside her fellows - but the habit of carnage was not one she cared to abandon. Quickly disillusioned by the growing hopelessness of the Ynnari's scared quest, she found herself an unlikely offer of employment among the Imperium - perceiving the new Order as a perverse and deeply ironic joke, she was only too eager to join, and quickly discovered that the brutish pulse of a bolter in her hand was as oddly thrilling and novel sensation after centuries of elegant, macabre slaughter-dance in the Dark City.

Following the Primarch's alliance with the Eldar witch Yvraine, rumours arose of a heretical hidden Order within the Adepta Sororitas: remnants of the Wych Cults of Commoragh - each minded by a Mechanicus Adept - slaking their thirst in mocking service to the Corpse God.

A battle-torn world, shrouded with smoke and lit by the fires of burning debris. In its midst are two figures: in the foreground, a drukhari woman dressed in the power armour of the Adeptus Sororitas, a bolter in one hand and chainsword in the other. Her hair is cut in a neat bob, in mock of the traditional style worn by the Sisters; her eyes are narrowed and her lips curled in a cruel, contemptuous smile. Behind her stands a Mechanicus adept, dressed in the red robes of the Skitaarii and armed as such, though their affiliations are not so clear-cut. Their limbs are entirely cybernetic, but from the neck up they remain quite human, denied the further blessing of the Machine God - hiding their shame behind a cowled hood. Weapon in hand, they enter commands into a hololithic interface - one eye always on their charge.

In their accommodations at Radz-at-Han, Zefiris and G'raha lie curled together, asleep in the afterglow of their reunion following her moons in the void. Zefiris is almost out of sight, only the curve of her hip and her long legs visible beyond G'raha, who lies curled at her back, arm and tail wrapped around her. The morning light through the stained glass windows paints their skin in vibrant colours - but they sleep on in the light, exhausted and content.

Too crowded for a sick room: too many people - strangers all - too much noise, every mindful, well-intentioned murmur bled together into incoherency…were it her, Zefiris would bolt for the door at the first opportunity. She looks to G'raha; from across the room, he watches the young Queen with the kind of resigned pity one might reserve for a wounded bird, claw-marks bleeding under fluffed feathers, its fate sealed even as it strove to mask its weakness behind rote behaviors: the polite smile, the regal nod, the diplomatic reassurances that did not reach her shadowed eyes. 'She bears the news well,' he murmurs as Zefiris joins him, leaning against the wall with her arms folded - it was the best place for a sheathed weapon when softer tactics were required, and she knows her strengths by now. Comforting strangers - especially those wearing the face of an enemy - is not among them…but G'raha is another story. The roughness in his voice is but memory given form: this throat never gasped the foul air of the 8th Umbral Calamity, but with wounded heart and scarred soul, he remembers - and every wretched moment of those years are etched on his face as he watches the girl act out her quiet display of dignity. 'You would know,' Zefiris replies, her hand finding his with a gentle squeeze, 'and you know it won't last.' He glances up at her, haunted eyes refocusing from the smouldering ruins of an unwritten future to the present - to her presence, and the beacon of her touch. Zefiris knows very well what she is about to ask of him - how after all this time, he has barely begun to heal himself - but better her before one of the others…so that should he refuse, she will see that is the end of it, and brook no entreaties to his better nature. 'Will you help her?' 'I will try.'

For a long time they were content enough with the promise they made to one another after EW - there was no real urgency to fulfil it. But as G'raha wakes beside Zef in the For'ard Cabins after the events of DT, it occurs to him that the time has never been better. Snips from an old WiP! 🧵 #zeflore
Gods, but he had missed this; these quiet moments of communion, rapt in one another's presence, a world that was theirs alone. It was not so terribly long ago that he had feared losing her forever; that their separation while she journeyed to the Thirteenth was but a precursor to a permanent parting of their ways - in retrospect, to bid her leave on the voyage to Tural alone mere months after they had endured such trials seemed half madness to him now. Yet she had flourished on this journey; he needed no account from Krile or the twins to see as much. It was written in her stride, evident in her dress; but mostly, it was in the knowing, surprisingly ready smile she would grant even to strangers here, foregoing her usual recourse to cover her mouth with her hand. It has been the right decision - and there had been little doubt he would follow her, in the end. He had promised her, after all, that wheresoever she would go, he would come to her. 'I promise to share in your burdens, however grand or insignificant. Wheresoever you may be or what might stand between us, I will come to you when you call...and if ever you are lost, I will find you.' Suddenly G'raha Tia knew what had woken him; what restless instinct had stirred in him, demanding attention. He had felt it before, on the night he first spoke those recalled words to her - a promise to bind them together. A promise he had yet to see wholly fulfilled. A promise that seized him, and moved him with a sudden exigency. 'Zef. Zefiris. Wake up.' 'Hmmm?' She stirred; his voice was barely above a whisper, but the urgency in his words was enough to rouse her immediately. It was not a habit of his to waken her outside of an emergency - her eyes flicked open, bleary but alert, awaiting grim tidings— But G'raha only smiled down at her, his gaze warm and mirthful; tousled hair in his eyes, chin resting in his palm. Zefiris squinted up at him, frowning. His face was close enough to her own that she could discern the gist of his expression, at least, and read no cause for alarm there…but he wasn't offering an explanation, either. Whatever mischief was on his mind, she wasn't awake enough for it; letting her eyes fall closed again, she sighed, and murmured: 'What are you up to…?' He did not respond in words, but reached out with his free hand to gently trace the line of her jaw with a fingertip, feather-light, coaxing a smile to her lips in spite of herself. Grinning at her response, he ventured a second pass, stroking her cheek with the back of his fingers in that habitual comforting gesture she loved so well. Zefiris had little choice after that - sighing in resignation, she arched her back in a sinuous stretch, unfurling into wakefulness. G'raha watched her, patient, committing her every movement in the moment to memory: the curve of her neck and the mark she wore there; the flex of arms grown powerful under the weight of her Reaper's blade; the flash of her argent eyes as she quirked a questioning eyebrow at him, still unsure of his game. He remembered the last time he had stood at this same turning point; how he had stumbled and faltered for all his conviction, and in the end, had not said the words themselves at all…but the warm kiss of the morning breeze caressed his shoulders like a prophecy, and this time, he would not hesitate. Blinking owlishly, Zefiris reached for her glasses, shoving them awkwardly on to her face with a carelessness that told more of their constant need for repair than any battle. Before she could adjust them herself, G'raha reached over, and with consummate care gently pushed them up to rest in their usual place, charted by faint hollows on either side of her nose; little use-marks he adored as surely as she favoured the arrowmarks darting the corner of his eyes. Looking into her eyes all the while, he caught the moment he came into focus for her, and their eyes truly met. It was a gesture of oddly intense intimacy that had never failed to warm him since the first time she had allowed it - and the way she smiled up at him now, chasing his withdrawing fingers with her lips, almost made him rethink his plan in favour of something more… immediate. But he held his course; pausing only a moment to savour the teasing brush of her mouth against his hand, and moved in a little closer to her. 'All right, all right. I'm awake. What do you want,' she asked, playfully aggrieved. For a long moment they only watched one another, their eyes dancing, soft with silent endearments. And then G'raha spoke, his voice sonorous and low. 'Marry me.' For an instant she went still. He saw how her eyes grew huge, depthless-dark; how that bloom of heat across cheeks and chest flushed darker; he heard the catch in her breath that she tried to hide - to mask with nonchalance, with the wry chuckle that was the leitmotif of their bedroom banter. ‘You asked me that already,’ she remarked. ‘I was sure I said yes.’  G'raha said nothing. He only watched her, sanguine eyes dancing, schooling himself to silence as he waited for her to grasp the fullness of his meaning. And slowly, slowly, he saw comprehension dawning in her. She blinked. 'You mean…now?' 'Now,' he nodded.  'Today.'

And Zef is all too happy to accept his reassurances that all is well with him; convinced that rest and comfort and time will be enough to see him hale, and that everything will be as it was - their well-earned fairytale ending.
For her part, Zefiris is confident and content - her eyes firmly closed as she smiles encouragingly at G'raha, eager to see them both home and settled and carrying on with their lives. Kokapetl frowns. From behind, the pair of birds carry on up the road toward the town, following the road into the future, blurry and indistinct as Zefiris' own wilful blindness.

...and making her way back via a supply cart between the Toll and the Find, leaving Zef's other bird, Kuro, to carry G'raha.

As they depart the Tower at dawn, he seems himself - a little ragged, perhaps; still tired, and nervous - but smiling, and eager.
Zefiris and G'raha leave the Tower behind them as they ride up the long road to Revenant's Toll, the sky rosy with a new dawn. Zefiris sits astride Kokapetl, smiling reassuringly over at G'raha, who rides the far more gentle and accommodating Kurohane. Though a confident rider, relaxed in the saddle, there is something fragile in G'raha's expression. Only nerves, no doubt, at his impending reunion with the others. They ride side by side, Kokapetl a little in the lead. Is it only Kurohane's deference to the more dominant battle-bird Zefiris rides that has her a pace ahead - or is G'raha holding his mount back a little in hesitation?

She holds G'raha 'til he calms - until he eventually falls asleep, in itself is a terrifying ordeal. She's shaken - but rationalises his reaction as only natural given the immensity of what he's been through. It will take time - what's important is he remembers. Nothing has changed between them.

It's a convenient excuse that absolves her of responsibility, and she knows it - and it haunts her later, when things start to go wrong.

Her face is set in a scowl, her lip curled. Zefiris: He looked so different, lying there - so young, so...and I took that from him. It was selfish.

Eventually she locates him amidst a series of unremarkable stasis units, which deactivate at her approach - but he doesn't stir, and she doesn't know what to do next.
In the darkness of the inactive Tower - on 'standby' - Zefiris stands holding the glowing Soul Vessel, her expression uncertain. She looks down on G'raha's slumbering form, curled uncomfortably on the ground under a stasis field as though having simply collapsed there.

Gaining enthusiasm, it goes on, grinning wildly as it addresses the Auditor directly: 'Whaddaya need, mister? We got combat types, bodyguards....Special Editions like me are gunna take a bit longer, but we're *real* good company—' Without sparing it a glance, the Scientist gently cuts the Special Edition off, as one might an overly-talkative child: 'Now, now,' he chastens, though his smirk towards the Auditor does not falter. 'Let's not be hasty.' Confident that the Auditor has now seen and heard everything he wishes him to, the Scientist puts an end to the show. 'Escort our guest out; I believe he has seen quite enough for one day,' he orders. Beneath his visor, his eyes are visible as he glances sidelong at the Auditor, enjoying his impotent outrage as he is effectively dismissed. The Bodyguard models draw closer at the Scientist's command. The view looks out from within the tank where the cloned constructs drift, blissfully unaware. From this perspective, looking down on the small group of observers, it is apparent that the lab is largely a ruin - blown off doors and broken glass speak to catastrophic failures past, barely swept aside before the next attempt was begun. There are no maintenance crews here, no research teams, certainly no ethics committees - just a lone genius, his delusions, and their unmistakeable results - his creations.

Not missing a beat in his exchange with the Sentry, the Scientist scoffs at the Auditor, not even bothering to turn to look at him - merely raising a hand dismissively as he retorts: 'As if your methods are any better. I am merely bolder.' The Auditor tenses, infuriated at his arrogance, his lack of respect - but he quickly realises the tenuousness of his position, and masters himself. The dull, fixated stares of the guards at the Auditor's back indicate their readiness to move at the Scientist's command. Seething at finding himself outmanoeuvred, but secure enough in his position, he speaks with quietly leashed fury, lip curled and teeth gritted: 'In addition, do not expect any further legal protections from us. The hounds have been at your door long enough, and I find myself...disinclined to stand in their way a moment longer.' The Scientist smirks at him, revelling in his advantage; this is clearly a long game between these two. 'A pity', he mocks, 'I had thought you of all people might have the requisite vision. Foolish of me.' The strange scar marks his cheek like a handprint in acid, terminating just below his jawline. Suddenly, the casually-dressed version speaks up - the first of the identical figures to do so aloud. Raising a hand decorated with messy black nailpolish to make a suggestion, its voice is rough, cheerful, and gauche as it suggests: 'Hey...hey, I know, Boss! Why not give him one of us?'

Framed on either side by the Auditor, and his closest creation, the Scientist stares up at the drifting contents of the tank - the next batch, the latest of many - as he muses: 'Each iteration brings me a step closer. It is only a matter of time before I achieve...perfection.' There is perhaps something of pity mixed with the disgust in the Auditor's voice as he condemns the Scientist, his gaze now turned firmly away from the floating bodies in the tank: 'Had I realised quite how far you've sunk into abject depravity, I would have ended our dealings long before now.' 'As it is', he continues, falling into the authoritative cadence of business, 'You may consider our contracts terminated - effective immediately.' The camera pulls back to view the Sentry - a red indicator light illuminating on its armoured back, between the shoulderblades. Detecting the shift in the Auditor's manner, the Sentry responds - silently communicating with the Scientist via a neural link, though its blank stare gives nothing away. This one, too, bears a shallow scar from nose to cheek, almost exactly like the other. #Threat detected. Defense protocols primed. Awaiting orders.# The Scientist responds wordlessly: #Remain on standby.#

A close up on the paired bodyguards draws attention to their identical appearance, their blank expressions, their vaguely fetishized leather garb. A close up on the Sentry stood behind them - its face and its fixed stare match the others, but this iteration is heavily armoured - or perhaps entirely cybernetic from the neck down, with a targeting reticule curving around its eye. Its hairstyle is similar to the bodyguards, but shorter and sleeker; like them, it bears an inked tattoo across one eye, but unlike them, a single jewelled earring hands from its left ear - a roughly-hewn crystal, incongruous. The Auditor turns his attention to the Scientist at last. He makes no attempt to hide his disdain, sneering down at the shorter man, his voice dripping with contempt: 'Do you imagine she would be pleased with your...efforts?' The Scientist frowns, arms folded and ears tilted in annoyance - this was not the response he had anticipated. He retorts sharply: '*When* I succeed, you might ask her yourself.' Behind him each iteration of his creations are visible - the Sentry, one of the Bodyguards - and the last, the one stood closest by his side. This one is different - dressed casually, its hair is longer, cut wolfish and steaked with riotous magenta, and a shallow scar reaches from nose to cheek. It stands at ease, hand in pocket, cocky; it grins, a hint of unruly mischief in its eyes. Those eyes are fixed on the Scientist as though he were the center of the universe.

The scene shifts to reveal the contents of the 'aquarium': several tall, feminine, grey-skinned bodies float within, apparently in varying degrees of awareness; some seem to swim - or try to - others merely drift, their limbs twisted and eddied by unseen tides. All are fully mature, but with hair cropped close. Aside from the customisation of hair and clothes, their appearance matches the pair of bodyguards stood at the Auditor's back exactly - as does yet another figure, standing close beside the Scientist, dressed similarly to him in synthetic streetwear, a weapon strapped to their back.

Two figures are seen from behind. One is tall, with short dark hair, dressed in a trenchcoat and posed in a world-weary slouch - the Auditor. The other figure is shorter, dressed in casual, offensively stylish techwear - youthful garb at odds with his white-streaked hair, pulled back into a braid - the Scientist. They gaze up into a space resembling a vast aquarium filled with orange liquid. A central core feeds the tank, regulating the temperature and chemical composition of the liquid. Indistinct shapes drift behind the glass. The Scientist, arms folded, asks: 'So, tell me...what do you think of my little project?' The angle shifts to reveal their faces. The Auditor is well-groomed, but haggard - hollow-cheeked and dark-eyed, a man who has seen much, and become inured to all of it - or almost of all. He glares up at the tank, brows knitted and lips pressed tight. The Scientist, on the other hand, grins; smug and self-satisfied. His eyes are concealed behind a visor which glows lurid red, and a strange scar mars his cheek. He continues: 'Merely a step toward the greater goal, of course - but a vital one, and not without its own potential applications.' The Auditor does not look at him as he speaks - his eyes are still fixed on the tank. He has seen much, and become inured to it all - but there is a hint of disgust in his expression, resigned though it is, and it drips in his voice as he responds: 'And should you succeed in your "greater goal"...what do you think she would make of this?' On the night of their reunion after her return from the Thirteenth, Zefiris sprawls asleep beside G'raha in their room in Radz-at-Han. She lies on her stomach, patterns of light from the stained glass windows painting her exposed back.
