AUTHOR INTERVIEW: ROSS MCDERMOTT Meet author Ross McDermott @beyondtheonions.bsky.social and his book Weathervane! Q: What got you into writing/art? A: In grade 3 we were awarded chocolate bars for the best 'story' of the week. I won a few, several actually, and discovered I was good at it and lived/loved the craft. Q: What do you love about horror? A: Horror blends so fluidly with any other genre, telling the tale of anybody, anytime, anywhere. Q: What horror book/creator is seriously underappreciated and why do you love them? A: Dean Koontz. I loved the Odd Thomas series and several other novels. He has an easy voice in the telling with clean, precise imagery and captures subtle horrors in subdued settings, sometimes leaving lasting impressions.

A: I was a little unhappy with the lack of love interest for Legolas in The Lord of The Rings, so I wrote my first fanfiction about that. Lucky for everyone, it is lost to time, but the urge to create has remained. Q: What do you love about horror? A: The atmosphere, the suspense, the slow unravelling of the truth. Also the weird space gods. Q: What horror movie was the last one to scare you, and why? A: Event Horizon. Yes, even after a dozen times. The idea of a derelict ship floating in space, touched by forces beyond all mortal comprehension and spreading that corruption to anything it touches... 10/10, perfect film, no notes.
