1b. I, truly, am a systems guy. I'll take Caves of Qud or over God of War every single day of the week. But games have been both crude and sophisticated about both systems and story for decades. Arguing that they only do one well disrespects narrative designers, who work so hard to blend these.

i guess what i will add in response to this is

1a. A medium, like a system, is what it does. And one of the things it has successfully done for decades now is make people care a lot about the little guys running around on your tv screen.

The interesting, sophisticated thing about games is not whether they can tell stories as well as books or movies (they can’t) or float shocking themes as well as fine art (honestly, who cares).

It’s the manipulation of systems, the play of contingency, the brokenness of machines.
