Hi friends! Please donate to our GoFundMe, or send us donations via Venmo, Paypal, and Zelle.

We need support to keep our clean air gear library active & to expand it. Donations help us cover our monthly operating expenses and save up for the new gear we want to add!

@cleanairstars.com's filters.cleanairstars.com is an easy to use tool to help you search by what standard you want to meet and noise level

Noise is the MOST OVERLOOKED part of using an air purifier.

35 dBA - sleep, quiet classroom, livingroom
40 dBA - average classroom, quiet office
45 dBA - noisy office, childcare, or classroom
50 dBA - loud childcare, gym, or restaurant
60 dBA - very loud bar or pub

Different organizations have put out different people-based standards. ASHRAE's "241" standard, released in 2023, incorporates what activity people are doing, recognizing that more aerosols are released when people are sick, speaking loudly or breathing heavily.

A Liters per Person per Second standard is based on the number of people in a room, not the size of the room. A L/p/s standard is preferred by Share Clean Air MSP because it is based on how many sources of aerosols there are.

Air Changes per Hour is based on the size of a room, and how often the volume of air in that room gets filtered. Different authorities have put out different standards.
CDC: 5 ACH
Ontario Society of Professional Engineers: 6 ACH
The Lancet (a top medical journal): 6 ACH

There are two types of standards:
Air Changes per Hour, based on the amount of space and
Liters per Person per Second, based on number of people

There are 2 questions to answer:
1) How much Air Filtration do I need?
2) How quiet do I need it?

A Guide to Choosing An Air Purifier, with a specific focus on an 'ACH' or air changes per hour standard, vs an 'L/P/S' or a liters (of air) per person per second standard, why we prefer a L/p/s standard, and a reminder that noise is one of the most overlooked parts of choosing an air purifier! 1/10

Its important to note that it is almost always best to try to have events outdoors to try to reduce the risk of viral transmission through aerosols. If you cannot be outside, it is also important to increase natural or mechanical ventilation when inside, in addition to using air purifiers. (7/7)
