There is going to be media coverage about how the Dems are pushing trans politics in Congress now. But anyone just watching the chronology of this play out can see what is happening. The party that ran ads about trans folks during the election want to make this an issue, and its not the Dems.

This is an echo of the general election. The trans Democrat is blamed for "sparking" the crisis despite the fact she did nothing beyond be herself.

Before she arrived to DC, or made any demands, the GOP preemptively turned her identity into a political issue.

So, who is doing identity politics?
all she did was exist

House Republicans actually voted today to block the US Senate from receiving their report containing sworn witness testimony and documentary evidence about the nominee for Attorney General of the United States paying a child $10,000 for sex.

That’s where we are at.

great thread and this has been one of my obsessions in my column, to point people away from the european example and toward the american one.
One thing I think people talking about the threat of authoritarian creep have gotten, if not exactly wrong, not quite right either is to frame discussion in terms of various European precedents.

Those are relevant to be sure, but we also have an American precedent - namely the South before 1965.

Just my 2 cents. But my goal is to ignore the trolls. Give them zero attention. Block them if they annoy me.

I think the worst thing we can do on this site is re-create the ad hominem/ personal attacks that occur across comments on Twitter/insta/tiktok/ etc

Trump isn't even in office yet & we're already talking about letting him bypass the Constitution as though that's a normal conversation to be having.

Step 1: Elon takes over Twitter, unbans and amplifies the worst white nationalist posters, methodically turns it into a right wing echo chamber.

Step 2: Users who aren’t white nationalists or MAGA extremists leave for Bluesky en masse.

Step 3: op-ed columnists fret, “is Bluesky an echo chamber?”

I’ve read a ton of the post-election autopsies. Here’s the problem with all the analysis — Black people. Nobody has more economic anxiety than Black folks. A lot of Black people are working class. Nobody Black is saying, I didn’t vote for Kamala Harris because she didn’t go on Drink Champs.

The amount of irrational hate of trans people from otherwise educated, informed people I know just shocks & saddens me to no end. It's so deep-seated & visceral. They can never point to one time, ever, that a trans person has ever hurt them.

The power of ignorance and right-wing fear-mongering.
