These little echinoderms are part of a collection I inherited - the common starfish (Asteria rubens). They have five arms, where they have rows of small tube feet used for locomotion and feeding on mollusks.

Another successful lab with gel electrophoresis. I use the Edvotek kit "Whose DNA Was Left Behind" but I created my own lab guide. Students love this lab!

This little magnolia blooms before it even has leaves. There are many kinds of magnolia, but this one is hardy enough to survive in Illinois.

In my Cabinet of Curiosities, I have this fetus model. It is made from some kind of polymer, and was found in the basement after a flood. I have resurrected it and put in on display next to the lamprey.

First crawdad sign of the year. These mud sculptures are created when the crustacean burrows underground and pushes out the soil. These animals are also called crayfish or crawfish.

The thorns of a rose are technically called prickles. Prickles are controlled by the LOG gene. Blocking the gene reduces the thorns.
