Those mountains are the eastern side of Olympic National Park. It’s 922,651 acres of costal beaches, tide pools, mountains, glaciers, subalpine meadows, rainforests, and many endemic animal and plant species.

The through of it being sold off for parts makes me physically ill.

The rightful Queen of the Puget Sound, the crown jewel of the Cascade mountain range, and the tallest mountain in the contiguous United States, the mountain Tahoma (officially known as Mount Rainier) rises against a perfectly clear blue sky, where she looms majestically over her kingdom. An active volcano that towers 14,410 feet above her namesake national park and the surrounding populace, her snow-topped peak is clearly visible on this cloudless day, leading the locals to, with their signature phrase, excitedly proclaim far and wide that “the mountain is out!” Please note that there is never a question as to which mountain is being recognized; there exists in all true Washingtonians an innate acknowledgement of and respect for our beloved guardian, standing in (currently benevolent) everlasting vigil over us all.

All of the kids in our neighborhood would spend HOURS building our own Roxaboxen in our backyards (upper right is me). It’s the book where I really, truly understood what imagination means and the magic it can create.

(I also absolutely recognize our privilege in having this kind of childhood.)
