Since most people think they're the same person, I don't think it's necessary to use such ambiguous phrasing. Maybe we'll learn more details in the next DLC.

Well, to be honest, I'm a bit annoyed that they hinted Lady and Pauline might be different people. It's not confirmed yet, though. Considering the time period, in the Donkey Kong universe, Pauline from Odyssey might have aged and dyed her hair blonde again.
