A great step in character creation is finding how much the characters crave approval.
Who do they seek validation from? How far are they willing to go to get it? Who do they want telling them they did good?
Maybe no one, maybe everyone. It impacts your character's actions.

I genuinely love looking back at notes I made for random projects bc I never remember anything I write & it's all out of context. For example: "The world has stuff like trains now but sometimes they're scary trains made of living metal that want to eat people."

Almost halfway through this 1st draft, I discovered I actually did write an outline... except it's the worst outline I've ever made. Like Act 2 just says "REINDEER" & I'm still not sure what it means

The only thing scarier than editing a horrendously messy first draft is my excessive use of M-dashes.

I like to say I write better when I'm half-asleep, but then there are the times when I need character names and all my exhausted brain has is Staniel, Jackary, and Paint.

Shocking update: writing stories that include ableist jerks actively makes me angry, because suddenly I am reminded that ableist jerks do in fact exist.

Just started working on a classic superhero short story idea... after all the eldritch monsters and weird, dark, semi-toxic characters, I literally forgot how to write normal people.
