Well, there's a big difference between paying a flat $20 monthly fee to obtain unlimited access to 10s of thousands of movies/shows, vs. paying a fee to unlock a single movie disc every time you want to watch it.

Choice A: Buy a DVD that is 100% DRM-free, with unlimited watches.
Choice B: Buy a DivX that you never really own because you have to pay extra whenever you want to watch?

No wonder DivX failed. What consumer in their right mind would've accepted that raw deal?

Young'uns nowadays have no idea what it was like to play video games back in the 90's, pre-Internet. You had to get tips and tricks information either through word of mouth or game magazines (if you were lucky enough to have parents that would pay for a subscription).
