Genomic Sequencing Lab Director, UC Berkeley; connoisseur of oddities.

Here for some chuckles and maybe some learning.

Opinions are my own not UCB, although spawned from a career in NGS from 454 and Solexa into the great sequencing beyond.
Can you add Watchmaker? I don’t know how…

But the HTS acronym is confused with high throughput screening, too. So I kinda hate High Throughput Sequencing. But yes, to all you say. Terms become irrelevant quickly but I guess that’s great because it means innovation 🤷‍♀️.

I think NGS is an antiquated phrase. It started with implying post Sanger but we can’t be “Next Generation” my entire career. The field is nolonger defined by a sequencing machine’s ability. Genomics is more relevant but I think we need a new & better umbrella term. The field is more holistic now.

I think the only potential benefit of Dr.Oz as CMS head could be a release on the LDT regulation switch. Will it be done well and with positive impact? Probably not.

But trying to understand what that man will do with FDA regulatory powers is like trying to teach my cats to sing in French.

In all fairness it did actually work in 2020-2023. And to some extent still does but I shutdown a clinical company running LDTs on Illumina as I could see the tides changing. MolDx and insurance billing is the real killer.

The flash floods dumping onto Stanley Hall on Friday were nutz! Then the landslide. Luckily the core is in a basement, we’d just be trapped and keep working 😂. We left at “landslide”.
