A blue square is mad that a painting portrays a sad blue square. The blue square thinks it is an offensive stereotype, but the artist blue square who made it says blue squares can be sad and is coming from a place of authenticity .The other square argues it doesn’t matter, because it reinforces a stereotype when other shapes see it. The artist argues that their art is self expression and not just for consumption by other shapes to instruct or teach them. They also argue that people who believe in stereotypes won’t respect you no matter how much you police your image or the image of your community, and it isn’t worth censoring yourself to appease them because it won’t work. The artist leaves and the other square stands silent, thinking. The blue square sees other shapes laughing at the painting of the sad square, but the square sees how they also laugh at the painting of a happy square. They mock even the ‘respectable’ painting. The blue square is bummed by this, but the artist approaches them, saying, “forget them.” The blue square agrees, and they look at the painting together. When they look at it, it is more complex and meaningful than it first appeared.
