The background to this outbreak: 4 cyclones in only 5 years destroyed critical WASH infrastructure, contaminated boreholes, and streams without a proper recovery in the horizon. In the district where I work, they are now even reporting <50% sanitation coverage, when it was about 80% 5 years ago

We had a conversation on the last #cholera outbreak in #Malawi, the worst one in the country's history. He told me that this massive outbreak was different, and they suspected a new strain but lacked lab capacity to confirm.

Great work by Caroline Rouard and her piers on the new @nejm.org correspondence on drag-resistant #cholera spread in Eastern & Southern Africa. This brings me back to a conversation from August with a Malawian environmental officer in one of the rural districts.

In one of Chekhov's letters from the Sakhalin's prison colony, he urged not to turn away: "Sakhalin is a place of unbearable sufferings, which only a human being, whether free or subjected, is capable of causing and undergoing". His call to bear witness to suffering is true today as it was in 1890.

Elections are being planned in Palestine, Lebanon, and now hopefully for Syria. It's my hope that Israel will join them soon. A new dawn for the Middle East is within reach! We, the people, now have the power to choose what will be its direction 💪 #Syria #PeoplesPower #Democracy
The lesson for Russia in Syria: things look very stable—until they don’t.
