had laid the groundwork for the more modern RTS games. I'd love to know how much time I sunk into this game compared to others at the time, but it would probably be a frightening amount. #TeamOrdos

19. Dune II (PC 1992)

As much as I loved Cryo's Dune, Dune II was an obsession. This was another I played heavily with my father. Clearly it made an impact on many people, becoming the catalyst for the whole RTS genre. I think I was already playing Starcraft when I finally realized how Dune II...

remember being frustrated since you could easily get stuck by not progressing fast enough and having the spice requirements outpace your production, but I came back to the game when I was a little older and completed it. I'm grateful the difficulty was manageable.

in a way that I hadn't experienced up to that point. If Myst had ever clicked for me, that probably would have been the next closest thing, but Dune to me felt like an amazing balance of resource management, exploration, diplomacy... it was Sim City and Civilization but also playing a movie. I...

18. Dune (PC 1992)

Ah, Dune. I don't remember when I first read (some of) the books, but I must have seen the David Lynch movie around the same time as encountering the first PC game. My uncle gave me a copy of it along with a xerox of the game manual. I found it captivating and immersive...

17. Rampart (SNES 1992)

I absolutely loved this game, and I played it with anyone I could. I loved the Tetris-like frantic building phases, and how you could make tiny holes in the wall that were impossible to repair. Definitely a multiplayer game with a single player mode as an afterthought.

What a blast from the past. Apparently I never even played the first game I bought. It’s been a backlog since day 1. 😓

It generally refers to using the foundational texts (or games in this context) to build a student’s knowledge of the subject. It’s always going to be subjective, but there are often generally agreed upon works that shaped development of a genre or changed history.

I think it’s necessary to separate original songs from pre-existing, and then further into jukebox musical movies and non-musicals.

(E.g. Josie and the Pussycats vs Strange Magic vs Grosse Point Blank)

16. JezzBall (PC 1992)

Such a simple premise; draw lines and confine bouncing balls in the smallest space. My dad and I had a lot of fun with this one. Especially once we figured out how to bounce the balls off the cursor and draw only one side at a time. A Microsoft Entertainment Pack gem.
