It actually is a bunch of wave textures overlapping with slightly different values and angles, so there's more variation is what's visible when you crunch it.

Just because I'm the writer/director of TADC doesn't mean I deserve all the credit for everything. There MANY times when a board artist or an animator will come up with a detail or shot that elevate the themes/characterization in a way I didn't even think of, and I'm like "fuuuuuck that's genius..."
