I've been trying to find interviews as to why, but none are popping up. I can only assume this is the reason for the rewrite, because the games localized by Pontac & Graff tended to have some odd changes, like saying Sonic was tortured in Forces when that's not said in the Japanese version.

But the new voice acting was undoubtably worse. I chalk it up to poor voice direction, lack of time and working with preexisting animation, but everyone sounded stilted. Which is wild since Shadow Gens sounded so GOOD. Unleashed didn't have major changes to script, so hopefully it can be untouched.

As far as I'm aware, the rewrites for the Generations remaster was because they wanted it to be closer to the original Japanese script and also add more references to lore. That meant they needed to rerecord lines. I didn't have much an issue with the new lines, just that they sounded a bit bland.

You should be able to. Prime takes place after Metroid 1/Zero Mission, so all you need to know is that game just happened. As for Fusion, it takes place after Metroid 2 & Super, but the intro gives you enough necessary info to understand the story.
