In his defence, I don't know how *I'd* put stuff like a helpful aunt in the book without it feeling shoehorned in somehow, and I can't string two sentences together at the best of times. Or the worst of times. Or times.

And also also, a lot of it is "I did something because if it was successful I'd have money/food", and little of it works. I think the book would have a different message if some of those things (eg, seeing Boris to borrow money) worked as he wanted, and not how he didn't (job at hotel X).

Pretty certain there's a lot of "narrative omissions" in that & also Homage to Catalonia (another favourite of mine).
