Beatles mostly. Released in 1967 and called Pepper. So, no wonder.
“McCartney a slick vaudevillian of industrious mediocrity” is a genius phrase brilliantly summarising how wrong everybody was about the man.

Would love it. Have sent you a message. Thank you.

Yeah wonderful thank you. Why George M’s son, otherwise largely flawless and loyal, chose to chop all that out and turn the end of Walrus into a Revolution9-esque piece of musique concrète, I will never ever understand.

I’ve spent 50+ years reading some of the greatest sports writers: Keating, McIlvanney, Winter, Glanville... but the best sporting journalism I have ever, ever read (Keith Talent excepted) was yours, about that Throw-In. The Kyle Walker one. Jonathan, please don’t waste your genius on this rubbish.

Spot on. There’s a great defence - though not uncritical - of the BBC by Richard Osman and Marina Hyde on the Rest Is Entertainment this week. Those opposing the BBC and the licence fee need to be careful what they wish for.

Genuinely astonishing.

Please unblock me Nemo. I love your stuff and I’m sorry for being a narna.

Anyway you are right Moose, because o is more than half of 8.

Yes me too but apparently it was Macca. (Have you heard the great @chrisshaweditor.bsky.social on My Favourite Beatles song podcast? His episode on The Word is perhaps the greatest single Fabs podcast ever). Anyway GLE is a Private Eye coinage (for Nigel Dempster): Greatest Living Englishman.

Great question and some good answers (eg TIL that Paul played piano on the wonderful The Word when I thought it was George Martin.) I only have one other thought - he composed Yesterday on the piano on waking, as the GLE himself is fond of relating 🙂

Aged 10. Saving pennies for months for £8.10 to buy the White Album. Got to about a fiver. Got into posh school so mum subbed me the balance. Listened to it all in one go. Burst into tears of spooked regret. Now I’m 58 & know it’s a masterpiece, but have never fully recovered from that experience.

After reading this I insisted that my son watch it with me on catch-up. It was ok but a bit disappointing. My son then pointed out we had watched the Premier League match from last year not the Grand Prix. Watched Grand Prix match. Laughed, cried, shouted, bonded. Amazing. Thanks, Jonathan.

It’s the first syllable of Get Back 🙂

Yup. Joy distilled and tipped into your ears (The Beatles, not the dog.). Name your dog after the Beatles and the job is complete. Mine’s called Sadie. Hope you are doing ok.
October 10, 2025 at 1:39 PM
I’m sorry Jamie. You’re so clearly a good man loved by many. When I get it I try & make myself do the things I do when I’m not depressed, but more so. Walk, talk, see the sun. Force yourself to do that and the tail may wag the dog and begin recovery. If you can’t do that, for gods sake seek help x

Thanks Chris. One of the things I got from it, apart from the usual sense of joy and awe, is from the excellent lead guitarist being right up front. It brings home, as the wonderful Fathom mentions in her video on AR, how exponentially improved and at the very top of his game George is throughout.

They are the new Rolling Stones. And they really deserve it. A small set of truly great songs and a brilliant vocalist.

Fair play to them.

I think the get-out clause is self-loathing rather than arch, but I might be wrong about that.

My favourite bit of Beatles Live At The BBC is when, after Brian wossname has been asking question after question to John and Paul about what they have been up to, George eventually interjects ‘Ringo and I have been painting Buckingham Palace’.

This reads comfortingly like a bit from a Stewart Lee standup show Rob. I can just see him returning the card that he read it off to his inside jacket pocket after a brief reflective pause. I’ll give it a listen.

A total guess but could it be Ringo’s stepdad Harry Graves? It rings the faintest of bells.

Wonderful thank you Donna. You may well have seen this at the time, but I think this video is fab as well, and the ‘making of’ video shows what a labour of love it was. m.youtube.com/watch?v=F362...
