This is one of the reasons why YGO cards tend to have outlines and an outer glow around the subject of the card. (like 95% of all YGO cards follow this rule) It helps with readability and makes them pop on small card art. Cards that don't follow that rule tend to look more like MTG cards.

Modern YGO has a very wide range of art syles. Nowadays you get stuff from a Cat Frappuccino creature to eldritch dragons. It has come a very long way since the object PNG with effects. Those still make up for the majority, but YGO has been getting much more creative with composition)

Do they remember if it was a shiny / holo card at all? That would help narrowing down what card it is. On the top of my head maybe D.D. Assailant, Swordstalker, or Dark Blade? Most great sword wielding monsters are knights or muscle builds.

Still my favorite card from childhood. Shame its so hard to summon and it is not really supported in Dark Magician or Buster Blader decks.
