Thx to our @sfpublicdefender.sf.gov Social Workers for making hygiene kits for our most vulnerable clients who visit our office. Many clients struggle w/meeting their basic needs & being system-involved is more destabilizing. The kits, sourced by staff contributions, offer them support & dignity.

San Francisco has one of the strongest policies in the U.S. to curb racially-biased traffic stops. Pretext stops are dangerous + ineffective—and SFPD is now limited in using them. Learn more + know your rights: tinyurl.com/KYRPretext + EndBiasedStopsSF.org

Last week, @sfpublicdefender.sf.gov assistant chief Angela Chan, a former police commissioner, commented to @missionlocal.org that SFPD stood passively by while ICE agents used pepper-spray, threatened protesters w/a rifle & sped off nearly running over a woman. missionlocal.org/2025/07/sfpd...

SFPD should not be enabling the abuses of ICE agents or unlawfully sharing sensitive surveillance data w/any federal agencies. The public deserves transparency & integrity from our police dept + a plan to verify the ID of any person attempting to take our immigrant friends, family, and neighbors.🧵

It costs roughly $130k a year to incarcerate someone in CA. While it's understandable to want to use every tool available to prevent more harm from coming to fire victims, that money would be far better spent on direct support. Tell #CAleg to vote NO on #AB468. Take Action: bit.ly/oppose-ab468.

@sfpublicdefender.sf.gov won several recent acquittals at trial, showing that the SF DA is charging the city’s most vulnerable ppl—often BIPOC—based on evidence that doesn’t hold up under scrutiny instead of allowing ppl access to services to help them long term. Read more: tinyurl.com/PubDefTrials

At a time when ICE agents are posting up outside immigration courts, @sfpublicdefender.sf.gov reaffirms that now more than ever, state & local officials need to stand united for due process & Sanctuary laws, prevent unlawful deportations, and keep families together. @kpixtv.bsky.social

Prosecutors are charging so many cases that they aren’t keeping up with their ethical duty to hand over evidence. @missionlocal.org

Meanwhile, SFDA’s refusal to let any DAs hold hearings in one key preliminary hearing courtroom has created delays & left our clients in jail longer. @sfstandard.com
May 27, 2025 at 3:42 PM
@manorajupd.bsky.social spoke with @kpixtv.bsky.social and @sfchronicle.com about why we’re limiting the number of new cases we take on, as our caseloads are now the highest in the Bay Area.

IN THE NEWS May 12-23, 2025 — @sfpublicdefender.sf.gov re: the resources needed to handle growing caseloads, meet our ethical duties to clients & prevent burnout; prosecutors withholding evidence & creating delays by refusing to let judges do their job; due process for immigrants & Sanctuary laws.🧵

Laws that uphold due process rights for immigrants and Sanctuary jurisdictions continue to stand strong in the face of threats to withhold federal funding and carry out unlawful detentions & deportations. #powernotpanic #knowyourrights

With a growing jail pop of ppl being held in custody to await trial & others being placed on ankle monitors that once again come w/ 24/7 warrantless searches, it’s hard to believe that people are truly presumed innocent. We need more effective & less invasive pretrial services. @kpixtv.bsky.social

More crim charges being brought against vulnerable San Franciscans is putting a strain on the courts b/c state law demands that criminal trials take precedence over civil trials. Trials are critical to ensuring just outcomes, as shown by the courtroom wins for our @sfpublicdefender.sf.gov clients.
