Recent immigrants, already tracked for deportation, seek the same work permit that anyone else can get in this process; many long-term residents have simply and understandably chosen not to track themselves toward possible deportation, even if it means they could get a work permit in the meantime.

2) articles like this do the far right's work of sowing division, uncritically accepting the fallacy that recent immigrants have some legal leg up on long-term noncitizens. Almost anyone can apply for asylum, and get a temporary work permit, but at the risk of being tracked to deportation if denied.
