Somehow this is the worst part.

Yet again I'd like to thank the publishing industry, Hollywood, and Yale Law School for ensuring this bigot's rise to prominence.

There's so much to unpack in this devastating investigation about JP Morgan's complicity in Jeffrey Epstein's crimes, but I just want to pause for a moment on this ridiculous quote. Powerful men don't just think about empires. They think they ARE empires.

Oh and, just to say, this matters in 2025 more than ever because people are out there pretending to be ICE agents. And as Farzam's story shows, it is ridiculously easy to impersonate law enforcement. And to get away with it. It's not even a felony in every state.

Things got REALLY weird when he petitioned to de-index the story, citing a court order... that didn't exist. Turns out, the document was forged. Which is a felony.

After that, someone began an intense online smear campaign against the friend-turned-informant. (Related sidenote: Farzam also seems to have left an Amazon review of my book.)
July 21, 2025 at 3:36 PM
In 2014, Farzam was hit with 77 charges, ranging from identity theft to forgery to illegal use of a weapon to assault someone—a homeless man outside the hotel Farzam owns. All but 4 of the charges were for felonies. But he only got a slap on the wrist.

But then the friend decided to become a government informant. For, um, reasons.
July 21, 2025 at 3:24 PM
Steve Farzam, a wealthy hotelier in Santa Monica, has been impersonating law enforcement for decades. For a while, he had a buddy who did it with him.

You'll be shocked to know that Stephen has been touting his supposed affection for "law and order" and "truth" since forever, and that it's always been a lie.

Fun fact: Stephen Miller has been whining about being called a racist since at least college. In fact, it's on the record, in an article that also quotes [checks notes] white nationalist Richard Spencer.

What a thrill to accept the National Magazine Award for Profile Writing alongside Rhana Natour, honored for her remarkable @atavist.com story "Coming to America." Thanks to the judges, congrats to all the winners and nominees, and end the genocide in Gaza now.

Maybe the most prize-worthy story I've ever edited won a National Magazine Award today and I am just so happy.

Thrilled that @atavist.com is a finalist for a National Magazine Award, and alongside such great company. I've never been prouder of a piece than I am of "Coming to America," which tells the story of one of the thousands of child amputees in Gaza.

New double byline with @csobelwrites.bsky.social just dropped. His name is Adair Darby Sobel. He's the best. If you wanna pitch @atavist.com or have questions about the magazine, please hit up @provenself.bsky.social and/or Jonah Ogles (jonah@atavist.com) until next June, as I'll be on leave.
