Wonderful! I have that to look forward to.

I reject the article's premise. If you read a lot of books, you are already different from most of your generation, and it doesn’t matter what generation. Music is the same! Take in ancient, old, new, Avant Gard, all of it! Just have your own opinion.
American cultural literacy is atrocious.

Makes sense. It says what's in the tin.

Was Aaron involved?
November 27, 2025 at 1:00 AM
I’m so glad you did that! I grabbed it right away.

Doesn’t everybody?

- see, Holloway, Tillich, et. al.

Quick game:

List everyone you can think of and then put a Y or N after their name. The question being "WOULD YOU TRUST THIS PERSON WITH A FLAMETHROWER?"

No Maybes.

It is enlightening.

Informationally, Flame Throwers are not regulated. In California, you need an Agg permit, and thats like $5.

Mind you there ARE a lot of regulations about burning things, and THAT is what you do with a flamethrower. Be aware.

Think about it, do you really want to wear a Napalm Backpack?

Jeeeez, Greg…

Not only did I get the Author to sign my copy of The Long Road Home (Alex!) I got his editor to sign it too! @ayvalentine.bsky.social

So, I third it!
November 25, 2025 at 10:18 PM
I’m not so sure about that…

We pulled it off!

We are both Hard Gen-X and cooking was a survival skill.

My little brother and I worked as a team to decipher mom's directions, research in the NYT cookbook ( and others), and proceeded to make thanksgiving dinner. We even set a formal table! The parents rolled in exhausted and collapsed into chairs. My little brother poured the wine.

Thats awesome!

Both my parents were Volunteer Firemen. One year the siren went off four times starting at about 2 in the afternoon. At around 6:00 my mom comes into our kitchen in full turn out gear, smelling of smoke, and gives me a list of of tasks and leaves.

Oh, come on, Clark! You KNOW you want to write about it!

for Clarity, I know enough coding to write "space invaders" in Basic on a TRS-80, and maybe do some HTML BS, if pressed. It’s never been my focus.

I probably know more about preventing cephalopods in a summoning grid.

Glad I know Clark!

Wow, I’m still trying to get my dad to use iMessage.

I would dial two numbers,"44", to ring my neighbor's phone to tell him to come over to play D&D. Local party line. Upstate NY, 1979. You could call any phone in our village if you knew the last four digits, no exchange needed. No area code to call Buffalo, 100 miles away. It changed in the mid 80’s.

So ideally the Core book, with all its flavor and style, should work hand in hand with the SRD. Each achieves a different and complementary goal.

I hope any of that helps.
November 25, 2025 at 9:35 PM
Setting can be distracting and Byzantine when what you want is "how do I grab this bastard??!" You don’t need to distill the the rule out of the SRD, you just read it. The core book might have a lovely, evocative description of "how one goes about laying hands apron a cretin," that's good for mood.
November 25, 2025 at 9:32 PM
If I’m making, for example, a PBTA game, I look at the SRD to inform me what goes in a playbook, and how is conflict resolved. it Should be faster to find answers to fundamental questions in the SRD than the full core book, unless the core book is sharp and sparse.
November 25, 2025 at 9:26 PM
I see an SRD as the operating scheme for a system engine. It should not contain copyrightable IP, but may define terms of art. It should be possible to run the games mechanics from the SRD. It should be clear and concise description of each component. As in what is the framework the game hangs on.

Tam-Lin. I meant Tam-Lin.

Folk themes carry. Thats why we keep hearing the same songs over and over again.
November 25, 2025 at 9:06 PM
People will still be playing Tam-Li, Black Dog, Hangman, and all the old folk stuff that we call "rock" well into the fifth Apocalypse from now. It just matters what they play it on!

Or they’ll just sing it.

🎼Oh, death…Oh death^, won’t you lay me by - for another year.

Or 🎼I wanna be sedated!

I never understood why some people go with "they will never catch me!" When its SO much easier to just "ask the guys who made the thing."
It's not like they are hiding on some remote island in the wilderness. They HAVE internet access, and that part of Canada is NOT wilderness.
It IS beautiful!
