That opening on the NW side was supposed to be a one-way *entrance*, but now it's a one way *exit*, with cyclists having to mount a tall curb at a really awkward angle to enter.

Basically the NYPD put in a massive concrete box around the entrance to protect against terrorist attacks without consulting anyone.

DOT redesigned the bike paths on/off the bridge a year later, and realized the structure would be hugely expensive to reconfigure. So now it's terribly organized.

I can only assume @nyctsubway.bsky.social doesn't know how to change them, or the contractor never built the tool to update them.

Congestion pricing also has the potential to improve the existing transit system, both by providing direct revenue for improvements or expansion, and by driving more ridership which can improve economies of scale.

The G trains are all half-length, so while an E train is 10 cars, G is 5 cars.

So the driver is as far from the back of the train on a G as the conductor is on an E.

On the Franklin ave shuttle, the train is only 2 cars long, and every platform is fully straight.

Don't threaten me with a good time.

Are they going to use the money to provide better train/bus service to MetLife?

"due to the variation in MTA’s signaling systems, the agency chose to bypass integration entirely. This decision required PSDs to operate independently, resulting in custom, station-specific systems."

Seems like a huge mistake, if automation isn't this project's north star, what is?
December 18, 2025 at 6:27 PM
I think if the MTA was expecting economies of scale for this project that was a mistake. If anything the MTA should be trying out three different technology approaches, with 3 different contractors, and see how many lessons learned they can get out of this project.

That Saturday number is shocking but not surprising, given how brutal the service changes were this weekend.

Every train on 8th Ave was packed to the gills and crawling. Getting around with a stroller was brutal.

Open gangway trains now. These are preventable.

Also, how did the kid get out the door at the end of the train. Aren't those locked?

This is why I'm always annoyed when I see new apartment buildings that have 1st floor apts right on the sidewalk. There's always a better use of that space. Even res zoning should allow daycare/doc.

My first apt was right on the sidewalk and it was pretty awkward, couldn't really use the windows.

Would be nice if they do something with the storefront they have inside the subway station.
December 12, 2025 at 3:02 PM
Where do you get 17% from? Over a 210-day period, 30-day passes would cost you $924, whereas fare-capped weeks would cost you $1020. That's a 10.4% increase.

Great stuff.

I would have liked to see 59 street mentioned as a potential target of de-interlining.

Singleride tickets will still be a thing after Metrocard is gone?
December 4, 2025 at 8:30 PM
Hmm, wasn't there a service increase on the m14 after the implementation of the 14th street busway? TBF, the process might have been speeds up -> ridership up -> service up to match ridership. So, it really hinges on the virtuous circle of increasing ridership and frequency benefitting each other

Janno being pretty outspoken against it on Brian Lehrer the other day gave me some hope that she's leaning against.
November 25, 2025 at 4:16 PM
Ironic, given that the merge between the C and the E is probably what caused those long waits.
November 25, 2025 at 4:15 PM
This idea definitely seems to be taking hold with the MTA's deinterlining of the F/M and likely the 2/3/4/5. Especially when there's cross-platform transfers available, it's just not that painful to transfer when the trains are running consistently.

Hopefully there's more to come.

The vibecast was kind of a whiff for today. Will we be redeemed?

Makes an awful lot of sense since the East Village is the only Manhattan neighborhood that the F train serves alone.
