I agree there is nuance here, but I disagree that the nuance is about the morality of his actions. He seems to have good intentions, sure, but that doesn't mean he isn't being cowardly and/or naive, and yet that still doesn't mean he can't be a likeable character anyway.

The hypocrisy is the point I fear - they use hate and fear to confuse people into supporting them due to the "ideals" they claim to have, simply because they can personally benefit from making people suffer.

Most of the previous entries did not have numbers, but MK8 counted them all when considering its own name. Mario Kart 10 is also more exciting branding than Mario Kart 9; same reason Windows skipped that number.
