So recently I had to postpone my exhibition opening because an SUV decided I don’t deserve two wholly functional legs. (I mean just greedy of me really). However, crutches and all we’ve scheduled new dates. Exhibition is in Woodstock, Cape Town. Poster and evidence of persecution by SUV attached.

It was written in China, while on an artist residency and engaging with artists and poets, but it’s about everywhere. And it’s about a kind of mourning when space to be truly creative and speak freely becomes curtailed, because it’s legitimately dangerous.

and more glamorous accommodations (for obvious reasons). We ate with the staff of the guest house, who were polite and sweet but I always felt a little invasive. The one lady asked me if I understood they were ordinary people, I asked her what she meant but she wouldn’t elaborate.

We mostly communicated through translation apps, and I spent a fair amount of time on the back of a scooter when we went into the nearby town or took the dog for a walk. (Weirdly almost domestic). We slept and worked in rooms below, and further up the stairs there was the guesthouse with a pool,

This particular poem came from a moment when I was working at an arts residency attached to a B&B. There were just two artists there, the other a Chinese artist. He worked with different media, but I thin identified chiefly as a performance artist, the pictures I saw were intense and visceral.
