I sold my APMs a while back and don't regret it. It's one of very few Apple products that I think aren't well designed and are missing critical features, like analog fallback. If your APMs die, they're useless. The io12 has true fallback to analog.

There are many high-end wireless options that sound better than the AirPods Max to my ears - the Focal Bathys for starters. The Dali io12s are expensive but sound awesome and are my preference. While neither has the slickness of the H1, both are far more comfortable, especially if you wear glasses.
