Interesting choice of song on the hospital radio.

Mac the Knife.

I'm not convinced it's that reassuring for those going into surgery.

My latest book, The Return of King Arthur, is now out.

I'd been researching British myth, and was staggered by how often I read the phrase "will return again in the hour of Britain's greatest need" for different figures.

Which provided all the inspiration I needed.

The feeling when you discover young children have a distorted view of chronology, and aren't really sure what long time periods mean.

Teaching some history at primary school, specifically about Roman Britain.

"Mr Flin," asks one. "Were you in Roman Britain?"

Sometimes I feel old enough...

OK. Seen today in Sainsbury's.

Christmas merchandising.

It's not yet Easter.

Is the world going mad?

Just re-released, the first book in my Building Jerusalem series, Green & Pleasant Land.

www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B096TN7HP5

It follows the fortunes of four young British soldiers who join in 1920, in a world in which WWI never quite started, but the tensions of the world remain.

Huhn, really moment.

"The 1970s are no longer in living memory; they're like the Edwardian period, history that no-one actually remembers."

Me: "Are you sure about that?"

(Gets howled down by crowd of Internet 20-somethings.)

From the misheard pile.

"Aha! Surprised you, Daddy. No-one expects the spinach in question."

Well, that was satisfying.

Listening to children read at the school I work at. One child read The Three Wise Toys.

Nothing hugely unusual, except this is a book written by, well, me.

The child said they enjoyed the book, but thought whoever wrote it was probably very silly. Fair cop, Guv.

One for the "For God's sake" file.

Seen today in shops: Easter Eggs.

Just, no. Let's at least get the post-Christmas sales out of the way first.

The winner of the household's quest to suggest the most pointless musical ever is over:

Silent Movie, the Musical.

Aw, that was nice. The children I work with at the school gave me a Christmas present today.

All for listening to them read and telling them stories.

How to confuse people. One of the teachers at my school is getting married. No problem. Miss Clarke is marrying a Mr Clark.

Is she going to change her name? To 'e', or not to 'e'?

The fun part about ideas from children in the after-school club is they'll constantly come up with ideas. 75% of them are unworkable (can the wheelchair have a laser gun?), 20% are OK, and 5% are brilliant.

Sifting through them and stitching the brilliant ideas together - that's my next challenge.

Ah. The perennial question: how to respond to someone who uses David Irving as a reference in a historical debate?

Putting on ignore, certainly.

But I'm still astonished to find that there are people who regard Irving as an academic.

Writing and background music. I use background music while writing. I've found I type in rhythm with the music. The mood of the writing is also shifted by the mood of the music.

Taken together, that means I'm going to have to be careful over my choice of music.

Am I alone in this?

That's a first. A neighbour accused me of being anti-Christmas.
Our family tradition is for decorations go up on the Saturday after school breaks up for the holiday so everyone can be involved. Apparently, this makes me a tyrant denying our children fun. Have they read any of the books I've written?

Interesting experience at After School club. Not only did one of the year 5 children (10 yo) know the word onomatopoeia, what it meant and how to spell it, they all knew about Chekov's Gun.

At age 10.

First book from my after-school club has been published (The Three Who Saved Christmas). The children (age 10-11) planned and wrote; I merely edited.

The premise is that Santa goes on holiday, has an accident, and Freddy, Holly and Steve have to save Christmas.

An interesting experience. I run an after-school club for Yr 5 children (10 years old), and they're jointly writing (with some light editing from me) what I hope will be a publishable story.

They've taken the story along a route I would never have considered. I'll keep you informed how it goes.
