The last time he’d stood in this doorway, it had been with Yune’s arm tight around his shoulders, herding him outside, urging him to run. It had been with the Goddess’s apathetic stare boring into him from afar, her gaze demanding to know his true nature, the burn of it like another kind of brand. Fifteen years later and the memory of it still sends a shiver down his spine.

Xiao and his master, Zhongli, come across an unconscious homunculus during the last snow of the season, one that houses a peculiar, fractured soul.
Xiao has trained under Zhongli in the spiritual arts for millenia, but the act of perceiving the soul is not a skill that comes easily to him, even after centuries of practice and study. Still, he elects to give it a try. He rests his ungloved hand between the shoulders of the still body and closes his eyes, reaching once again for the elemental energy that swirls all around them. It responds to him like an old friend, showing itself in the form of a mild breeze that softly caresses his face. Bending to his subconscious will, the energy travels down his arm and allows him a glimpse into the man’s subconscious, impressions forming in his mind in response to his gentle prodding. Beneath his fingertips, somewhere deep in the man’s unmoving body, he feels a flicker of… something. It feels like a soul, but it’s so insubstantial, so faded, that he can’t say for sure. A tiny flicker in a sea of emptiness, it is unlike any soul Xiao has ever perceived. “What… is he?” He’s not human, that much has become apparent. If he was, he would most certainly be classified as a corpse, and would have no soul left to call his own. And yet, a fragment of one still lingers in him, clinging so tightly to his spirit that it is impossible to dislodge. Even if he were to try, Xiao isn’t sure he could banish it by any mortal means, not without physically destroying him. “He’s something artificial. A doll, perhaps, or a homunculus. It is difficult to say for certain,” Zhongli explains, raising a hand to his chin thoughtfully. “Still, he clearly has some kind of life in him. What exactly that means, I’m not sure, but it is a life nonetheless.” Life. A precious thing, a concept that has been drilled into Xiao’s head from the earliest days of his training. To leave behind a person in peril who still has a chance at life would be a sacrilege on their practice as masters of the spiritual arts, but could this being really be considered a person to begin with?

After his journey ends and he and Lumine go their separate ways, Aether decides to buy a house.
To Make A House A Home Aether decides he wants to buy a house. He might as well, considering the fact that he’s already committed to settling down in Liyue for the foreseeable future, and it’s not as though he’s hurting for cash. Between the investments he’d made along his journey and the veritable mountain of favors he’s collected over the years, he’s certain that he can strike a decent deal in any place he chooses to settle down in, but Liyue in particular holds a special place in his heart. It’s where Xiao is, for one, and that in and of itself is enough of a reason to pick it over any other country, but he’s also grown to truly love the harbor, with its bustling streets and friendly shopkeepers and thriving economy. So long as he keeps close to the city, he’s sure not to want for anything, not with Liyue’s vast network of imports keeping the shelves of its shops well-stocked. So, he decides he’s going to buy a house. It’s the natural second step after deciding he wants to live in Liyue, and he immediately gets to work doing his research and getting in contact with an agency that can help him narrow down his options. His real estate agent’s name is Xiuying, a friendly, if a bit energetic, young woman new to the profession but no less knowledgeable about its inner workings. She’d been a referral from Keqing herself, and that’s a type of praise Aether can’t help but find credit in. If Keqing says she’s good, then she’s good, no doubt.

In a peaceful forest that war has not yet touched, the great demon Xiao encounters an angel.
In Our Corner of the World The young man is a thing of ethereal beauty, the kind of sight Xiao has only heard in stories and legends. When the man notices his approach and turns to look at him, innocent amber eyes blinking back at Xiao in amazement, Xiao cannot help the warmth that blooms on the back of his neck and spreads to his face, his lips parted in a quiet gasp. “An angel,” he whispers to himself. A spirit of life and good fortune, of plentiful harvests and inexplicable miracles. To be lucky enough to find oneself in the presence of such a rare and fantastical being is to have all of one’s wishes granted, or so the stories often say. He is Xiao’s polar opposite. Unconsciously, he takes a step back, shying away from the angelic being. He shrinks in on himself, his head ducking low. The fact that the angel has so much as spotted him is already a sacrilege; he needs to run, to get away, to put some distance between them before the angel decides that Xiao is too much of an eyesore and banishes him on the spot. He tears his gaze away and spins on his heels, his feet thrumming with the inescapable urge to flee. “Wait!” He hears the angel call after him, his voice sending shivers down Xiao’s spine, but Xiao is already gone, ducking back into the thick undergrowth where he can escape from the angel’s piercing stare.

Meet Me Where The Fallen Stars Live “Is it over?” someone asks from just behind him, their voice tentative with disbelief. Hushed whispers and frightened murmurs pass through the crowd of battered warriors like ripples on a pond’s surface, but their comments do not reach his ears. There is only static, the neverending background noise of someone whose mind has ceased to form coherent thought. Shadows cling to the edges of his vision, and his many wounds still drip blood onto the ground beneath him, but still he does not move. He can’t. He won’t. Cradled in his lap is an unmoving form. His legs splay out limply at his side, his torso weighing down on Xiao’s legs heavily. One of his hands is gripped tightly by Xiao’s, while the other has fallen against the dusty ground at his side, the back of it brushing Xiao’s knees with the awkward angle it’s bent at. His shoulders lay cradled in Xiao’s elbow, his forehead resting against the crook of his neck. Despite how close his face is to Xiao’s, he feels no warm breath against his neck, no reassuring brush of skin against skin that would betray the stillness of the body in his grasp. His dusty hair falls into his eyes unbothered, his long braid coming undone in places. It drags through the dirt and debris when Xiao tightens his grip, dust and leaves clinging to the still-fresh blood splattered across it. He can still feel the shadow of Aether’s touch against his face, the final caress of a hand lifted with his last bit of strength. His bare fingers had left scorching marks against Xiao’s jawline, a harsh reminder of a sensation he will never again get to feel.
