Since it emerges, ‘academicness’ is not dependent on the presence or absence of specific features relating to language, genre moves or argument. If what made writing academic could be reduced to these specific features, then hoax academic papers such as those by Alan Sokal (Cuthbert, 2018; Franca & Lloyd, 2000; Sokal, 1996, 2008) and Ike Antkare (Labbé, 2010; Labbé & Labbé, 2012; Van Noorden, 2014) would count as academic in virtue of the fact that they display the features that standard academic writing programmes readily teach as ‘academic’ (such as the passive voice): despite displaying conventional academic forms, hoaxes promulgate ‘nonsense’ (Alvesson et al., 2017) and, in so doing, they fail to adhere to the standards of excellence (MacIntyre, 1985) inherent to socio-academic practices (SAPs). These SAPs include epistemic virtues such as a commitment to the truth (Connell, 2013), to academic integrity (Zgaga, 2009), to social justice (Case, 2013) and to innovation and research (Warnock, 1989). Such commitments require an ethical orientation towards honesty, an orientation that must be intentional and originate from an agent, in this case the writer. Neither an automated generator of academic jargon (C. Labbé, personal communication March 25, 2014; Labbé & Labbé, 2012) nor the deliberate human intention to mislead and distort disciplinary knowledge (Sokal, 2008) is commensurate with these standards of socio-academic excellence. It is in this sense that academic hoaxes do not count as academic because academicness cannot be reduced to its forms and because there are no inherent standards of excellence from which academicness can emerge. Clearly, however, those who published these articles, the editor-readers of Social Text and Springer (for Sokal and Antkare, respectively) believed them to be genuinely academic, probably because they based their judgements of academicness on the form of the texts (i.e. they looked and sounded academic). Media ecosystems refer to both traditional and digital media, which can either amplify, counter false narratives, or emphasise sympathy and condemnation for specific parties. Major Western news outlets have shown double standards in reporting on Palestine. For example, it has already been argued that the US media tends to emphasise Israeli suffering while minimising Palestinian suffering. Between 7 October and 24 November 2023, The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and The Washington Post were 16 times more likely to cover Israeli deaths than Palestinian deaths. Similarly, words such as ‘slaughter’ and ‘massacre’ were 60 and 124 times more likely to be used when referring to deaths of Israelis as opposed to those of Palestinians (Ali and Johnson Citation2024). At times, journalists have been more receptive to Israeli narratives. In one example, CNN journalist Nick Robertson reported a false Arabic translation from an Israel Defence Forces (IDF) official despite being told by a colleague that this was incorrect (Al Jazeera English Citation2024). A colleague commented on this, stating that ‘Trusting the Israeli government rather than one’s own colleagues is “giving cover to the Israeli government”’ (Al Jazeera English Citation2024). This has all been made more potent by Israel’s prohibition of journalists in Gaza, which itself facilitates alethocide. Resources such as funding enhance the scope and potential of disinformation campaigns, while expertise allows for more sophisticated operations. For example, some countries are ‘digital superpowers’’; they have the means to use digital technology to influence audiences domestically, regionally and internationally (Jones Citation2022). With its tech industry in the domain of surveillance and social media manipulation well established, Israel can be considered a digital superpower. They produce and export spyware such as Pegasus and are home to organisations such as Team Jorje, who run networks of thousands of fake accounts spreading propaganda on behalf of their clients (Andrzejewski Citation2023). The global matrix of coloniality also involves technopolitics, which is also a key modulator of disinformation and thus alethocide. The role of tech companies as gatekeepers in shaping hegemonic realities is increasingly crucial. History is littered with examples of how corporations can become more powerful than nations themselves (Jones Citation2023). The tech behemoths that are wealthier than many nations are mostly American and have selectively enforced content moderation policies, allowing pro-Israel disinformation to spread while restricting Palestinian voices. In terms of systemic-ness and longevity, the US President Joe Biden repeated the false claim of decapitated babies long after it had been debunked (Scahill Citation2023). The longevity of this disinformation was emphasised when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu repeated the debunked information in a speech to the US Congress in July 2024. In his speech, Netanyahu falsely claiming that Hamas had burned babies alive and killed two babies in an attic. Netanyahu’s speech was met with widespread applause by the predominantly Republican audience, which itself indicated an uncritical embrace of the falsehoods (Haaretz Citation2024). The cumulative disinformation surrounding the killing of babies reflects not just media reach but also penetration into public consciousness and high-level political discourse. Biden’s repetition (Scahill Citation2023) of these unverified stories underscores the geopolitical modulation of disinformation, in which key actors – particularly political leaders – exploit their epistemic privilege to intensify the spread and impact of falsehoods. These dynamics illustrate how disinformation can be modulated through the hierarchical reach of political and media structures, producing long-term harmful effects.

Charter’ The outcome is a People’s Charter, which has five top priorities for political action. The full report will be released in due course, but its headline takeaways are that the UK must: Tax wealth by removing tax loopholes and closing tax havens. As part of this, it calls for an end to pension tax subsidies. It also demands that the government charge the equivalent of NI on investment as income over £5,000 a year, and apply VAT to banking services. Strengthen and enforce anti-corruption laws. This means prohibiting lobbying, gifting, and second jobs in politics. A Future Generation Act. Implement a first principle act that ensures all government policy prioritises well-being, sustainability, and nature over GDP for all current and future generations. An immediate total embargo on arms, trade, and support for all countries that are in violation of international law, with immediate priority to be given to Israel. Long term decommodification of housing, ensuring renters rights. Councils should repurchase disused housing/empty homes/holiday homes to repurpose and build green council housing. It calls for the government to enshrine structural laws without loopholes and implement rent increase caps. Some of these key proposals include: A legal constitution which provides the people of Britian & Northern Ireland the power to decide when to start or join a war. Arrest, trial, and sentence for those complicit in genocide abroad and in the UK. Guaranteed basic income for all. Remove the principle of free movement of capital through introducing capital controls. End fuel poverty through a universal free quota of green energy after which the cost of energy progressively increases. Urgently enact strict AI regulation. Democratize the honours system.

Such policy undermines the capacity for intellectual love by fragmenting academic relationships and dissociating them from their intellectual purposes (Rowland, 2008, p.355)

83. Leading universities, especially from global-minority countries, partner with Israeli institutions in areas directly harming Palestinians. At the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, labs conduct weapons and surveillance research funded by the Israeli Ministry of Defense – the only foreign military financing research at the Institute.299 Notable Israeli Ministry of Defense projects include drone swarm control300 – a distinct feature of the Israeli assault on Gaza since October 2023 – pursuit algorithms301 and underwater surveillance.302 From 2019 to 2024, the Institute managed a Lockheed Martin seed fund connecting students to teams in Israel.303 From 2017 to 2025, Elbit Systems paid for membership to the Institute’s Industrial Liaison Program, enabling access to research and talent.304I 84. The European Commission’s Horizon Europe programme actively facilitates collaboration with Israeli institutions, including those complicit in apartheid and genocide. Since 2014, the European Commission has granted over €2.12 billion ($2.4 billion) to Israeli entities,305 including the Ministry of Defense,306 while European academic institutions both benefit from and reinforce this entanglement. The Technical University of Munich receives €198.5 million ($218 million) in EC Horizon funding,307 including €11.47 million ($12.6 million) for 22 collaborations with Israeli partners, military and tech firms.308 The University and Israel Aerospace Industries receive €792,795.75 ($868,416) to jointly develop, with other participants, green hydrogen refuelling,309 technology relevant to Israel Aerospace Industries

Booking.com and Airbnb have been in the OHCHR database since 2020. Booking.com may label properties as “Palestinian territory, Israeli settlement”, but it continues to profit from the colonies and faces criminal complaints in the Kingdom of the Netherlands for laundering proceeds.242 Airbnb briefly delisted illegal colony properties in 2018243 but reversed course under pressure,244 now donating profits to “humanitarian” causes and converting colonial profiteering into humanitarian-washing.245
