Today, another Italian in Brazilian literature: Machado de Assis often included Italian characters in his works. One example is the fortune teller in A Cartomante. Such figures reveal the cultural presence of Italy within 19th-century Brazilian literature. #ItalyBrazil

We continue with fine arts and the Italian painter Giorgio de Chirico (1888/1978). He never visited Brazil, but was strongly connected within the international art scene, which is why he painted Clarice Lispector in Rome and is supposed to be the painter of the following portrait of Lina Bo Bardi:

Do you know that Giuseppe Ungaretti spent five years in Brazil? From 1937-1942, the Italian poet taught literature at the USP and became familiar with Brazilian culture. During this time, his brother and his son died – two painful experiences, he later turned into poetry. #ItalyBrazil

What a coincidence (is it?) that our network started in 2024, cause this year we are celebrating 150 years of Italian migration to Brazil 🎉. It was 21st Feb. 1874 when 386 Italians reached Espírito Santo - the beginning of an intense relationship that continues to shape Brazil until now #ItalyBrazil
